DORONIO SUBS AS PACQUIAO'S SPARMATE

MANAILA (PNA) -- Philippine lightweight contender Leonardo Doronio will have the rare chance of trading punches with Manny Pacquiao this coming Tuesday in a lone sparring session at the MP Tower Gym in Sampaloc in Manila.

Doronio is a reputed a hard-punching, speedy local campaigner will pinch hit for the Korean World Boxing Organization Orient-Pacific junior welterweight titleholder Min Wook-Kim, who was earlier picked to be the eight-division champion?s sparring partner at least in the first phase of his training camp.

Doronio was contacted by Jonathan Penalosa, brother of former two-division champion Gerry Penalosa, through his trainer Renren Flecher, a hand at the Mandaluyong City boxing stable.

?Isang beses lang naman, kaya kinuha ko na. Kelangan na daw ni Manny ang sparring habang nasa Maynila man lang siya,? Penalosa said.

?Tuwang-tuwa nga si Doronio dahil isang karangalan dawn a maka-harap niya si Manny kahit sa sparring lang.?

Min was scheduled to arrive Manila last Wednesday but failed to do so.

His camp in Seoul told Gerry Penalosa to wait till he settles his spat with his manager.

Gerry though discounted the Korean fighter?s honoring his commitment, ?I talked to them and they sounded hindi na magkakasundo, Gerry told People?s Journal. ?Min has been reported to be going to the U.S. para doon na mag-campaign sa ilalim ng bagong manager.?

The unavailability of Min poses a problem in Pacquiao?s fine-tuning schedule as the Korean was supposed to at least fill in the gap between this next two weeks of preparation and the arrival of Hall of Fame chief trainer Freddie Roach.

It was Pacquiao himself who decided to start early with the sparring aspect of training so as to maintain the gains achieved in his two-week camp at the Pacman Wild Card Gym in General Santos City.

The almost one year since he last climbed the ring last December when he suffered what was believed then might be a career-ending sixth round knockout at the hands of arch-rival Juan Manuel Marquez, could also be a reason for the decision to advance the sparring two weeks than the usual practice.

The fighting Sarangani Province Congressman took timeout from his GenSan camp by flying to Manila early Saturday for a social commitment. A two-day workout, including sparring with Doronio, has been scheduled before his team flew back to GanSan Wednesday.
