Three Mandaue City boxers snatched wins in their respective bouts in the elimination bouts of the boxing tournament at the start of competition of the Batang Pinoy Visayas Leg in Maasin City. The boxing bouts were held at the City Bus Terminal.
John Excel Mugar of Mandaue City won over Jerome Silva of Leyte Sports Academy by unanimous decision; Vicente Siose of Mandaue City humbled Peter Munilar of Consolacion by UD; Jesneal Magsayo of Tagbilaran outpointed Hergie Gemeda of Cebu by UD; Roniel Piamonte of Southern Leyte triumphed over Anthony Tunacao of Cebu by UD; Ariel Sibay of Mandaue City prevailed over Shaquel Miole of Maasin City by UD and Richard Rama of Cebu edged Ariel Lamoste of Southern Leyte by split decision.
The preliminary bouts were attended by ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson and International Technical Official Madam Karina Picson. Ed Picson came to iron out some problems which cropped up due to the rift between ABAP and ABREJAP, the referees and judges association. But everything pushed through as he personally supervised the conduct of the boxing tournament. The officials especially those of Maasin City and Southern Leyte who attended the Batang Pinoy Visayas were not part of those who "rebelled" against the ABAP management.
Southern Leyte Boxing Association still gave our support to Picson as we believed he has the trust and confidence of ABAP Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and ABAP President Ricky Vargas. We believe that ABAP is the sole organization which is recognized by the AIBA, the International Boxing Association. It is also the national sports association duly recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission.
In karatedo, Cebu City dominated both boys and girls division as they hauled the lion share of all gold medals at stake. Cebu City dominated blitz chess and rapid chess.
Maasin City dominated futsal as they conquered three teams in succession, Baybay A, Baybay B and Borongan. Iloilo Zarraga and Cebu City prevailed in softball games.
Maasin and Cebu City won in sepak takraw. In volleyball, Ormoc City won over Subangdaku, Mandaue in the girls division while Cebu City won over Ormoc in the boys division.
