MANILA (PNA) -- No less than 162 athletes have already secured their slots in the Philippine delegation that will battle for flag and country in the coming 27th edition of the Southeast Asian Games this December in Myanmar.
Pending the still on-going qualification and validation process being conducted by the four-man Philippine Olympic committee-Philippine Sports Commission task force, this number might still swell to 248, which , according to POC chair Tom Carrasco will be 45 percent less than the 534 the country sent two years ago in Indonesia.
The reason, according to Carrasco, also the President of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines during yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura, is because some 86 more athletes are still knocking at the task force?s door for inclusion.
?Some sports associations still have to complete their selection process, some have athletes competing in Southeast Asian, Asian and world level competitions so we have to wait for their results to determine whether they should go or not,? Carrasco explained.
?A ?lean and mean? delegation, that?s what will carry the country?s colors in Myanmar,? Carrasco said. ?Whether intentionally or otherwise, this number represents what the POC had in mind as per instructions ordered to us when the task force came into being.?
Counting the coaches, team managers and trainers, and not including the adminstrative staf, secretariat, medical and dietary group, the total number of the delegation might swell to as many as 328, which according to Carrasco, might bloat to 348.
Still that number pales compared to the 750-strong PH contingent in 2011.
The size of the contingent was based on the crieria promulgated by the POC as well as the product of more than four months of meetings conducted by the task force with NSA representatives, monitoring of the athletes performances in the international competitions they took part in from after the last Games until August, Paul Ycasas, a task force member representing the PSC, disclosed.
The criteria used in the selection is gold medals won in the last Games, potential gold medals and medals won in the Asian and world level competitions athletes participated.
Of the 33 sports in the Myanmar calendar, the Philippines, according to Paul Ycasas, who accompanied Carrasco to the SCOOP session, will be vying for honors in 26.
The task force, which also includes national delegation chef de mission Jeff Tamayo and Romy Magat of tennis, actually asked for recommendations from the concerned NSAs as early as April 19 this year, but many of them responded rather late in what delayed the finalization of the list.
Here?s the breakadown of number of athletes so far approved:
Athletics 23, aquatics (including diving) 17, archery, 4, badminton 2, basketball (men) 12, billiards 3, boxing 10, canoe-kayak 2, chess 4, cycling 17 (road race, MTB and BMX),
