Games and Amusement and Board Chairman Juan Ramon ?Monju? Guanzon wished Escalante City-born Jerry ?Dangerous? Nardo (17-2 win-loss, 8KOs) the success in his quest to obtain the World Boxing Union superflyweight belt on August 8 in Southport RSL Club, Southport in Queensland, Australia.
?I advised him (Nardo) to stay focus in the fight and keep with the gameplan,? the GAB executive said. ?As I always tell all the boxers to remain humble and give importance to their efforts,? he added.
Nardo, alongside his team led by manager Rev. Henry Guanzon, flew to Australia las Saturday.
The 21-year-old Negrense fighter, who wears the Top Prime Stable colors, accepted the challenge to become the next world champion from Negros Occidental as he set to face the 27-year-old Australian Corey McConell (12-1-1, 1KO?s) at the latter?s home turf.
Nardo said, before the team left, that he will do his best to win the fight and bring home the championship belt. ?I have trained hard and prepared well for this fight. I?ll give everything I have to win,? Nardo said. ?I have to make sure that I either win by unanimous decision or by knockout, if possible. Fighting in the opponent?s ground is tough,? he added.
For the part of head coach Edcel Tiringtiring, he has prepared Nardo well for this fight. ?All I told him to play harder and put every match in his heart. This is a once in lifetime opportunity, so they have to give all they got,? he said.
Guanzon further said that to augment Nardo?s training; he has to take road runs to the highland areas of nearby towns of Murcia and Don Salvador Benedicto. ?We must prepare him for a long fight. He must be prepared for a long battle,? Guanzon said.
Rev. Guanzon, on the other hand, said that Nardo has long been waiting for this opportunity to prove his worth inside the ring and become another world champion from Top Prime Stable. ?This is his chance, so he must work hard for it,? he added.
The manager added that he keep on telling Nardo to learn from the experiences of reigning WBO minimumweight champion Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo, and WBC-OPBF superflyweight and WBO Asia-Pacific ?King? Arthur Villanueva, who had worked hard for their respective titles. ?If Sabillo and Villanueva were able to do it, I am sure that he can also do it,? he added.
?We appeal to our fellow Negrenses to pray Nardo in his quest to bring pride and honor not only for the province but to the country,? he said.(Watchmen Daily Journal)
