BACOLOD CITY ? ALA gym?s prospect Jimmy ?Popeye? Paypa had a last round rally on Sunday evening to escape a split decision against Manila?s Christian Abila in a 10-round clash at 125 lbs. during the Cobra Tunay na Lakas Boxing held at the BAYS Center here.
Paypa (13-2 win-loss with 4KOs) started strong in the first two rounds of the fight landing heavy punches on Abila, which forced the Manila-based fighter to pull back. Despite Abila?s reach advantage, the Cebuano slugger went through the defense to connect head and body punches. As Paypa launched number of combinations, he incidentally landed an accidental low blow on Abila as international referee Samson Libres gave the Cebuano fighter a warning.
In spite the suffering an early low blow and absorbing heavy strikes, Abila fired back in the third round sending Paypa on canvas in the mid-round.
Both fighters then had exchanged tempo in the succeeding rounds which ended quite close in the 9th round as Paypa took the flow of attacks in the final round to sack the victory.
In the main supporting bout, Bacolod?s pride Juren ?Turbo? Labordo gave Ricky Sabia of Elorde Stable powerful and solid punches in the early minutes of the 8-round match at 114 lbs. ? forcing the visitor to kiss the canvas at 1:28 of the opening round.
Labordo, a native of Brgy. Pahanocoy, improved his record to 10 wins with 6 by knockout.
Meanwhile, in the other undercard fights, Roland Servania, the youngest brother of WBO-OPBF super bantamweight champion Genesis ?Azukal?, scored a slim edge to win over Jonas Sultan of Zamboanga del Norte in the 6-round fight at 115 lbs. Scores read as: 58-56, 58-56, 60-54.
Top Prime Stable rising star Junjessie ?Tornado? Ibgos of Himamaylan City booked his 5th win (all by KO) against Mamark Siano of Butuan City.
But, Raul Yu, also of Butuan, stopped Bacolod?s Romel Redondon in 2:25 of the first round as Alvin Sibugan of Brgy. Pahanocoy won over Steve Recaborda of Dumaguete City via unanimous decision.
On the other hand, John Rey Melligen knocked Zamboanga del Norte?s Jemart Amlani with 2:24 in the 2nd round while Roniel Parcon of Bacolod City defeated Albert Campilan of Butuan City.
