
SOUTHERN LEYTE ANNIVERSARY BOXING TOURNAMENT 2013 (DAY TWO - SEMIFINALS)

MAASIN CITY - The second day of the AIBA Open Boxing Tournament held in connection with the 53rd Southern Leyte Anniversary was action-packed. Held at the Capitol Sunken Garden of this capital city, it drew the city's boxing aficionados in droves to witness the new style of open boxing, now replacing amateur boxing.
First phase was the Engkwentro designed for those who were not able to participate in the regular tournament. The results were Johnrey Libonato of Tacloban defeated Alryan Lomot of Tomas Oppus, 2-1; Roberto Batoto of Matalom prevailed over Joseph Orello of Maasin City, 2-1; Mateo Maquiling of Tomas Oppus crushed Crisanto Paler of Matalom, 3-0; Jervin Salisinas of Matalom triumphed over Dinnes Guibao of Baybay City, 2-1; Wilden Ken Ignacio of Tacloban City dominated Alquin Silot of Tomas Oppus, 3-0.
in the elite category, Jolito Catagasan of Tomas Oppus stopped Rico Arcina of Sogod by TKO 1st round at 52 kg. Elite division is for boxers aged 19-years-old and above.
In the AIBA Open Boxing, the results were Danilo Oja of Matalom prevailed over Julius Sapitin of Tacloban, 3-0 at 36 kg; John Smith Gonzales of Leyte Sports Academy edged Jeffrey Orello of Maasin City, 2-1 at 46 kg; Arnulfo Hinandoy of Baybay City outscored Edgardo Medio of Camiguin Tiger Boxing Stable, 2-1 at 46 kg; Meleno Anduyan of Leyte Sports Academy blanked John Escoton of Alang-Alang, Leyte, 3-0 at 42 kg; Wowie Baloca of Baybay City humiliated Giovanie Argata of Leyte Sports Academy, 3-0 at 45 kg.
In the elite category, Jerwin Sumeguin of Leyte Sports Academy downed Jason Entia of Maasin City in the 1st round to win by split decision, 2-1 at 56 kg; while Jerome Panginiban of Leyte Sports Academy triumphed over Ritchie Jangao of Camiguin, 2-1 at 60 kg. The elite boys category do not require anymore the wearing of head guards.
The tournament was presented by the provincial government of Southern Leyte through Governor now Cong-elect Damian Mercado and Congressman now Gov-elect Roger Mercado. The officiating was done by the national referees and judges of the Southern Leyte Boxing Association.
