
SOUTHERN LEYTE ANNIVERSARY BOXING TOURNAMENT 2013 (DAY ONE)

MAASIN CITY - The provincial government of Southern Leyte in connection with its 53rd Founding Anniversary on July 1, 2013 had in its calendar of activities an Invitational Open Boxing Tournament. Held at the Capitol Sunken Garden of this capital city, eight boxing teams took part in the three-day competition sponsored by Governor Damian Mercado, now congressman-elect, Congressman Roger Mercado, now governor-elect, and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
The opening was held on June 25, 2013 attended by yours truly as chairman of the event. Also in attendance was DILG provincial director Johnny Badocdoc.
The participating teams are Leyte Sports Academy, Tacloban City, Baybay City, Bato (Leyte), Matalom (Leyte), Camiguin Tiger Club, Tomas Oppus (Southern Leyte) and Maasin City. The tournament consisted of two phases - the Invitational Tournament and the Engkwentro for those who did not qualify for the tourney proper.
The results of the Engkwentro are: Rey Christian Pagulayan of Maasin won over Ariel Bacaro of Matalom, 3-0; Alvin Gopio of Matalom prevailed over Jay-ar Bongan of Maasin, 3-0; Felix Cinco of Baybay defeated Jhayvie Donaire of Maasin, 3-0; Joshua Gohel of Tomas Oppus dominated Neslie Javar of Bato, TKO 2nd round.
Other fight results are Joshua Orello of Maasin outscored Ike Juntilla of Tacloban, 3-0; Romie Evale of Maasin blanked Warlo Guibao of Baybay, 3-0; Evan Maquiling of Tomas Oppus edged Jumar Aquino of Maasin, 2-1; Jason Ladrillo of Leyte Sports Academy stopped Ricky Fabilla of Tacloban, TKO 1st round; and Jason Oletres decisioned Jundel Villegas, 3-0.
In the 46-kg division tournament proper, Arnulfo Hinandoy of Baybay conquered John Celemar of Bato, 3-0; Edgardo Medio of Camiguin Tiger Club triumphed over Romel Dominguez of Tacloban, TKO 3rd round; and Jeffrey Orello of Maasin swept Rock Salonga of Matalom, 3-0.
The officiating officials are national referees and judges accredited by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and members of the Southern Leyte Boxing Association. The new rules on open boxing were implemented.
