MANILA (PNA) -- No less than 130 fighters, representing 26 countries, will strut their wares in the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Youth Boxing Championships on March 10-17 in the coastal town of Subic in Zambales.
Named ?Boxing By the Bay?, the one-week slugfest will feature the region?s finest fighters in the 17-18 year old age bracket in 10 weight divisions from light-flyweight (49-kilogram) to super-heavyweight (91-Kg.).
Powerhouse China, North Korea, the former Soviet Republics, along with the Middle Eastern bloc, including war-torn Syria, are among the nations that have confirmed their participation.
A crack Philippine team, headed by the 2011 World championship gold medalist Eumir Felix Marcial (64 kgs), will carry the country?s colors in the prestigious series. The ABAP-PLDT Philippine team has drawn from youth pool James Palicte (60 kgs), Jade Bornea (49 kgs.), Ian Clark Bautista (52 kgs), and Jonas Bacho (56 kgs).
Top honchos of both the organizing Association of Boxing ?Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) and host Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority have expressed readiness to roll the red carpet for the arriving boxing delegations.
ABAP president Ricky Vargas expressed gratitude to SBMA chairman and administrator Roberto Garcia and deputy administrator Raul Marcelo for the ?enthusiastic support? they show for this national effort because ?this is not just an ABAP venture but a national one.?
?We expect our guests to not only enjoy exciting and competitive boxing, but also everything that Subic Bay has to offer in terms of accommodation, entertainment and an environment of relaxation and the good life,? Marcelo, for his part, said. ?We are proud to partner with PLDT, Smart and ABAP in welcoming all our guests.?
?We want to highlight this (ASBC Youth Boxing Championships) a world-class event. Chair Bobby Garcia has given explicit instructions to fully cooperate with PLDT-ABAP in seeing to it that all efforts are made to impress upon our foreign guests our unique brand of hospitality, organizational savvy and the natural charm of Subic Bay,? Marcelo added.
ABAP executive director Ed Picson said SBMA has given the air-conditioned Subic Gym, venue of the fights, an entire makeover with ?a fresh coat of paint, comfortable lounges and locker rooms.?
Ample security personnel will also be made available to assure order in the event, according to Picson.
