MANILA (PNA) -- Saying that repeating the embarrassing sixth place the country suffered in the last Southeast Asian Games two years ago would not be acceptable, Philippine Olympic Committee chair Tom Carrasco yesterday vowed that the POC will be buckling down to work the whole year if only to improve on that standing.

?We?re not promising the moon like we would be eying the overall championship, but certainly we will do everything we are capable of doing to escape that deplorable finish,? Carrasco, who represented newly-elected POC president Jose ?Peping? Cojuangco in yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session declared.

?We would be happy enough if we end up a decent fifth or fourth,? Carrasco said during the forum, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA.

?Kung puede pang mag-third, mas maganda at hndi na tayo mapapahiya sa ating mga kababayan. Huwag namang sixth or, worse, seventh, for that matter. That?s already unforgiveable.?

Reminded that Myanmar, which wound up behind the Philippines in 2011 and as host of this year?s SEA Games, will also do everything and anything to improve to sixth or even fifth, Carrasco retorted, ?No, I don?t think Myanmar can overtake us. Malayo ang agwat natin eh.?

For a start, Carrasco, who is also the Triathlon Association of the Philippines president, disclosed that the POC had just completed a one-day strategic planning session last Tuesday to map out the body?s and objectives for the next four years culminating in the 2015 Olympic Games and the plans to accomplish them.

?There?s no definite action yet. What we had done actually is to lay down what are the international commitments on hand this year, which are the Asian Youth Games, the World Youth Games, the Centennial Games and the SEA Games and accept suggestions from members as to what to do about them.

Carrasco noted the atmosphere of camaraderie displayed by POC members during the one-day planning session. ?We?re hoping that this atmosphere of unity and will prevail in the four years of our term.?

Like in 2005, the only time the Philippines won the overall plum, the POC chair said athletes? training will play an important part in the preparations although he added, ?POC president, Mr. Cojuangco, believes proper conditioning could also be a key.?

?That?s what he?s always been saying that our athletes lacked the physical strength in our past participation in the SEA Games, Asian Games and the Olympics. Kaya he will be handling that aspect in preparations.?

The TRAP head also reported that the POC has also named four members of the board to work with their counterparts in the Philippine Sports Commission for obtain smooth working relations with the government agency by way of monitoring the progress of preparations of athletes in the different sports POC vice president Joey Romasanta, he said, will be working with Commissioner Iggy Clavecilla, auditor Julian Camacho with Commissioner Akiko Thomson and directors Jeff Tamayo and Cynthia Carrion with commissioners Jolly Gomez and Buddy Andrada, respectively.

Carrasco said the appointment of secretary general has not yet been discussed although he added that Cojuangco has expressed preference for outgoing secgen Steve Hontiveros of bowling with either Mark Joseph of swimming or Romeo Magat of tennis as deputy sec. gen.

?We expect everything to shape up after the SEA Games Federation meeting on Jan. 28 where Joey (Romasanta), Jeff (Tamayo), Julian (?Camacho) and Steve (Hontiveros) will be reprwenting the POC,? Carrasco remarked.
