Manny Pacquiao has agreed to return to the ring on September of next year. This was revealed by trainer Freddie Roach. The Nevada State Athletic Commission imposed a 120-day suspension on the eight-division world champion including 90 days without contract due to the severity of his last knockout to Mexican tormentor Juan Manuel Marquez. But his trainer including his promoter Bob Arum wanted him to take a longer rest.
"April is too soon after a knockout like that. We spoke about his next fight. I told him that I think he should come back around September and he agreed with me," Roach was quoted by 710 Radio as quoted by Miguel Rivera and Rene Umanzor of Boxing Scene.
?The way I look at it, I don?t see doing it before September because with the election in May you can?t do a June fight,? Arum was quoted by Gerry Ramos of spin.ph. ?I don?t want to do a summer fight, and so September is the best possible day. And because Marquez is Mexican, we can do it on Mexican Independence weekend (mid-September).?
The incumbent congressman has to hurdle the May 2013 elections although he ran unopposed in the lone district of Sarangani. But he has his partymates to support. His wife Jinkee is running for vice governor while brother Rogelio is challenging incumbent representative Pedro Acharon, Jr. of South Cotabato.
The possibility of a Pacquiao-Marquez V strengthened with the huge pay-per-view success of the fourth fight. It was reported that it generated 1.15 million PPV buys and still counting which could translate to $70 million. The first fight was not shown yet on PPV. The second fight made 400,000 views while the third encounter raised 1.125 million buys.
The major hindrance to the fifth fight would be their respective families who wanted them to hang up their gloves. Next year Marquez would be 40 and Pacquiao has just turned 34. But the temptation of a bigger paycheck especially for Marquez who is due to receive a bigger share of the revenues is too hard to resist. The fifth encounter is set to be a record breaker.
Pacquiao?s biggest box-office hit was his clash with Oscar de la Hoya with 1.25 million PPV?s. Other Pacquiao grossers were the fights with Miguel Cotto (1.2 million), Shane Mosley (1.2 million) and Antonio Margarito (1.125 million).
Pacquiao was ahead on points when the KO punch put him to sleep on the sixth round. Prior to that, Marquez?s nose was shattered putting some if?s and but?s on that fourth encounter. It could be Pacquiao?s last fight should he suffer another loss. But it could be a great stepping stone to a Floyd Mayweather superfight if he hurdles this one.
The April 20 fight with Brandon Rios did not push through because of the unexpected knockout loss. The September fifth clash is planned to be held at the 80,000-seat Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
The health of Pacquiao becomes an issue after the brutal knockout. Although he was cleared by the hospital in Las Vegas, Arum is planning to bring his favorite boxer to a Cleveland brain center for further examination after New Year. The Hall of Fame promoter will shoulder all the bills. This is to ensure that Pacquiao would not end up with the same illness as his coach Roach, who suffers from Parkinson ?s disease, when he retires.
