PACQUIAO IMPRESSIVE IN SPARRING SESSIONS

Bring on Juan Manuel Marquez!

This was the feeling prevailing inside Team Pacquiao following another gruelling week of training that saw Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao complete 32 rounds of sparring highlighted by knocking down one sparmate, additional 90 minutes on the road and several rounds more on heavy bag, double end speed ball and conditioning regimen.

Last Thursday, Pacquiao, currently in intense training for his coming Act IV of his rivalry with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, boxed for 10 rounds against regular partners Frankie Gomez and Ray Beltran and somebody no one in the team knows except chief trainer Freddie Roach.

What made everybody happy, from Roach, assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri, Roger ?Haplas? Fernandez, Marvin Somodio, and his boxing mates themselves was the eight-division champion?s sending Gomez kneeling the canvas after catching a powerful left to the chin.

?Routine session lang naman noong Huwebes kasi we were about to end the heavy sparring on the way to tapering off with the training regimen starting next week. Kaya nagulat lahat nang kumunekta si Manny ng kaliwa na nakapagpaluhod kay Gomez,? one member of Team Pacquiao, who requested not to be named, told People?s Journal in a telephone conversation Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

No one is allowed to grant interviews since the team pitched camp at the Wilde Card Gym in Los Angeles four weeks ago. Reason why nothing was reported on the highlight of Thursday?s training session.

That Gomez, a welterweight prospect, was coming from a recent third round KO victory over Manuel Leyba was enough reason why happiness was in the faces of Roach, Pacquio himself and the rest of the training staff when the fourth week of training ended last Saturday.

?Masaya lahat, siyempre. Kasi ibig sabihin nun handang-handa na si Manny na lumaban although we still have two weeks remaining in preparations,? the source said.?Hindi rin naman push-over na boxer itong si Gomez. Wala pang talo ito at talaga namng may sinasabi kaya nga kinuha ni coach Freddie.?

People?s Journal?s informant was referring to Gomez?s immaculate 13-0 win-loss record, including 10 via stoppage. A few days ago Pacquiao himself told People?s Journal he expected to be ready to rumble by the end of this week.

?Tama si Manny, handa na nga siyang lumaban kahit bukas siguro,? said the source with giggle in his voice.

The fourth week at Wild Card ended 12 rounds of sparring ? four rounds each against Gomez, Beltran and the unnamed walk-in partner taken by Roach.

?Starting Monday, medyo babawasan ang frequency ng sparring at malamang mag-concentrate sa improving more on the speed and conditioning,? the course disclosed. ?The idea kasi ay maging aggressive at dalhin ang laban mulka simula hanggang matapos kaya kailangan ma-sustain ang pace.?
