The coming fourth encounter between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez is a must win for the Filipino boxing icon as well as for coach Freddie Roach. The third Pacquiao-Marquez fight, which the former pound-for-pound king won by another controversial decision last year, was the last prominent win for Roach.
Roach?s fighters now have lost four consecutive major fights and cost his image as world?s best trainer. It began with British world champion Amir Khan?s defeat to American Lamont Peterson. Second was Pacquiao?s controversial split decision loss to American unbeaten fighter Timothy Bradley. Third, Khan lost again this time via knockout to the American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia. Fourth, Julio Cesar Chavez was beaten by Argentinean fighter Sergio Martinez. What is more embarrassing is that Chavez was also found positive on drugs.
?I do my job the best I can and get Manny for this fight,? Roach was quoted by Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene. ?It has nothing to do with any of the other fighters I train. I thought he won his last fight 11 rounds to one, I don?t consider that a loss at all. It?s just business as usual in the gym.?
Pacquiao wants to just focus on winning the fight notably without any controversy. He does not feel any burden of being victorious to revive the credibility of his trainer for more than a decade. He just promised to simply do his best.
Earlier Pacquiao tweeted for coach Roach on his MannyPacquiao Twitter. ?I promise Master @FreddieRoach that the winning streak will resume on Dec. 8,? stated Pacquiao?s tweet on October 6, 2012.
?I want to erase the last fight and any doubts in number four. I will focus this time. I have to study and train using new techniques and strategy and apply techniques never used in my previous fights. I will fight and train like the old Manny; the 25-year-old Manny,? said Pacquiao as quoted by Ashley White of Bettor Boxing.
?For three training camps, we worked on Manny staying away from Marquez's tough straight right hand. He never failed to do it right in training, and then, in three fights, he kept walking right into it. For some reason, Marquez dictates the direction Manny moves,? added Roach.
Marquez is the only boxer whom Pacquiao was not able to dominate. Roach is vigilantly studying the counterpunching power of the Mexican ?Dinamita? and how to get rid of it. Both Pacquiao and Roach promised a knockout win to erase all doubts.
Roach was chosen Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He is also presently the boxing coach of UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and currently training former two-time world champion Lucia Rijker, one of the best women boxers.
Roach has trained 25 world boxing champions. As a professional boxer he fought a total of 53 bouts and garnered 40 wins (15 knockouts, 25 decisions), 13 losses (3 knockouts, 10 decisions), and no draw.
