CHICAGO -- It was bad enough that the Bulls played without injured guards Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich Monday night at the United Center. What made it worse was playing against Boston Celtics spitfire Rajon Rondo.
The 6-foot-1, 186-pound point guard came up a little short of a triple-double effort, but his 20 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds was just enough to beat the Bulls, 101-95. A three-time All-Star, Rondo sank 10-of-16 field goals in 37 minutes of action that was highlighted by one spectacular play after another, especially down the stretch when the Bulls threatened to steal the outcome.
After Luol Deng's lay-up put the Bulls to within 93-95 in the final 49.9 seconds of the fourth quarter, Rondo took charge and anchored a perfectly executed pick-and-roll that resulted in an alley-oop dunk for Kevin Garnett, putting the Celtics safely ahead, 97-93 with just 41.9 ticks to go, And after Taj Gibson flubbed two free throws, Rondo then delivered the coup de grace with an assist that led to a Brandon Bass dunk and an insormountable 99-93 Celtics bulge.
Garnett finished with 15 points and five rebounds for the Celtics, who shot 50.6 percent from the field (41-of-81). Bass tallied 16 while Paul Pierce had a quiet 10 points on just 4-of-13 shooting.
Deng paced the Bulls with 26 while Joakim Noah added 17, but the Bulls couldn't overcome a miserable night where they made only 34 of 74 shots, including just three of nine 3s. The Bulls also missed seven of their 31 free throws. Carlos Boozer, the Bulls' $15 million a year power forward, accounted for 15 points, but he sat out in the fourth quarter.
Following a rough and tumble start, including a brutal bashing at the hands of the Miami Heat during Opening Night, the Celtics improved their won-lost slate to 4-3 while the Bulls, who closed out their five-game home stand before going away on a two-week road trip, dropped to 4-3.
