MANILA(PNA)- An increase in the volume of sparring to further add power to his fists and improve on his timing will mark Manny Pacquiao's second week of his Los Angeles camp.
"Everything went well, no problem. He?s been improving as days go by, " was all trainer Freddie Roach could say by way of assessing what transpired in his Filipino pupil's first week in the camp that started October 15.
As to what the camp has so far accomplished, no one would dare disclose following a gag imposed on all members of the team on granting interviews in so far as what's going on with Pacquiao's preparations for his coming fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8 (December 9 in Manila).
"No more interviews with Freddie and all members of the team," Roach's long-time secretary Marie Spivey told this writer, who, sometime last week, tried to get hold on anybody who could make an assessment on the progress of training.
She said only Top Rank publicist Fred Sternburg is allowed to conduct interviews. She did not say why, however. Conflicting reports appearing in the different media outfits could be the reason though.
Pacquiao has so far logged 18 rounds of sparring with three partners -- Russians Suhrab Shidaev and Ruslan Provodnikov and Mexican Ray Beltran -- in his LA camp at the wild Card Gym.
Make it 25, including seven with Filipino welterweight Anthony Marcial in the first stop of preparations in hometown General Santos City.
Pacquiao has also logged no less than 20 hours of roadwork at the flat General Santos Sports Complex Oval and at the mountainous Griffith Park in Hollywood.
Two more welterweight and junior middleweight prospects are expected to join the sparring sessions this coming weeks ? Frankie Gomez, who is fresh from a third round knockout victory over Manuel Leyba last Saturday, and, possibly Swedish Patrick Bogere.
Gomez will be providing his unbeaten 13-0 win-loss record (11 via Ko?s) to Pacquiao?s arsenal, while Bogere will also be using his stint at the team for his coming fight on November 16 besides exploring his 11-1 slate in adding to the Filipino?s credentials.
Pacquiao, likewise, expects to start his conditioning regimen under trainer Alex Ariza, who is back with the team following his falling out at the height of preparations in the Filipino ring sensation?s last fight against Timothy Bradley early this year. It was Pacquiao?s decision why Ariza was able to reclaim his spot in the team, a team insider informed this writer. Ariza bolted out of the Baguio City camp to join Julio Cezar Chavez Jr., who had a scheduled coming fight then in what irked other members of the team.
