MANILA (PNA) -- In an effort to widen its base for identification of new and fresh talents, the Amateur Softball Association-Philippines is reviving the mothballed National Intercollegiate Women?s Softball starting this year.
Twelve teams, including all seven school competing in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) , two in the State Colleges and Universities Association (SCUAA) and three from the provinces, have responded to the ASA-Phil call by confirming their participation in the first edition of the tournament since 2007.
Called the Cebuana Lhuillier Intercollegiate Women?s Softball Championship, the 2003 edition is set October 15-21 at the Rosario Sports Complex in Pasig City, according to ASA-Phil operations manager Ismael ?Jun? Veloso who appeared as guest in Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
Heading the cast that will play in the one-round, two-group eliminations are the defending UAAP and National Open champions Adamson University Lady Falcons and last season?s losing finalists University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, Veloso announced at the forum, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA.
Others in the field are the University of the East, University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo, La Salle National University, all of the varsity league, long-time SCUAA titlist Rizal Technological University and Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
St. Louis University and University of Cordillera of Baguio City and Central Philippine University of Iloilo round out the competing teams vying for honors in the series.
?Actually there are At least three or four more provincial teams have also signified their intention to compete, but the limited space the ULTRA can give us for the purpose of billeting the players and officials deterred us from accepting their participation,? Veloso said.
The ASA-Phil board, headed by its president, Jean Henri Lhuillier, Veloso added, promised to expand the participation next year. ?Plan is to also make the tournament an annual affair in the ASA-Phil calendar as this will provide the link between our youth development program, like the Palarong Pambansa, the National Open and other commercial competitions.?
?The schools, actually, are the main sources of talents for our national teams in both men and women so that the consensus in the board is to schedule more tournaments involving the different educational institutions, especially in the south, acknowledged as breeding ground of good softball players,? the ASA-Phil operations head said.
Also present in the weekly forum are coaches of several competing teams ? Zacarias Bacarisas of NU, Noel Bumagat of RTU, Ronnie Alvaran of Ateneo, Estelito Hernandez of La Salle and Jason Santos of Adamson, who all welcomed revival of the collegiate league.
?Maganda itong nangyaring ito kasi this will pave the way for players from the provinces to play against their Metro Manila counterparts and at the same time continue their studies for their bright future,? Bacarisas said by way of summing up the other coaches? sentiments.
?This, actually, is what we?ve been lacking. Tournaments that can provide the link between the Palarong Pambansa and the regional eliminations and the commercial leagues,? Bacarisas, a top-notch player during his playing days and many-time coach of the Philippine Blu Boys and Blu Girls, added.
