?Prince? Albert Pagara of the ALA Gym preserved his unblemished record when he won over grizzled veteran Marvin Tampus at the main event of the ?Bakbakan sa Balamban? last night at the Mayor Esperanza Binghay Memorial Complex in Balamban, Cebu.
Tampus, a former Pan-Asia Boxing Association (PABA) light flyweight champion, started well in the early rounds posing a threat to the younger Pagara. But The Prince held the fight on his own attacking well the seasoned fighter with punches to the body as well as attacks to the head.
Speedier with quick lateral motion, age really matters as the punches of Pagara hit his target to pile up points through the mid-fight. Tampus countered to get rid of the widened gap in points.
The Bato, Leyte fighter used his ample experience to evade Pagara?s moves to stop him. The outcome though was very clear that the fight was in favor of the undefeated ALA fighter. The scores are 100-90, 99-92 and 99-91 for a unanimous decision win.
True to his nickname ?Bato? in honor of his hometown, Tampus is a hard stone to break whom Albert failed to shatter to the canvas. Pagara had high respects for the former regional champion.
?Tampus is a veteran boxer that is why I was not able to knock him down. He shows lot of guts and determination. He is a good fighter due to his vast experience. But I just outclassed him,? said Pagara when interviewed by this writer.
?I will visit my family in Maasin on Sunday and pay a courtesy call in your office on Monday,? added Pagara. Prince Pagara is now 13-0-0, 9 KO?s while Tampus? fight record dropped to 27-16-2, 18KOs.
He will be warmly received by the people of Maasin especially in his home barangay Lib-og, led by his uncle Barangay Captain Walter Sepe and his mother Sabrina Gerogalem Pagara.
Pagara is scheduled to fight in Maasin City, Southern Leyte, his birthplace, on November 16, 2012 against a Thai boxer with the name still undisclosed by his boss Antonio L. Aldeguer. We would want a foreign opponent for him to bolster his Orient Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) ratings. The fight card will be billed as Maasin Pride IV. This is for the birthday of Gov. Damian Mercado who is set to run for congressman of the lone district of Southern Leyte.
Tampus also fought many times in Maasin City as an amateur boxer under the tutelage of the former Orient Pacific flyweight champion Socrates Batoto and won all fights. Aside from Tampus, the Batoto stable has produced top amateurs in the likes of Junrey Canete, Lowell Saguisa, Gerry Lota, Ryan Tampus, Ryan Bito, among others.
