MANILA (PNA) -- All medalists in the last Southeast Asian Games and winners the Asian level and world level competitions have been seeded to make it to the national delegation in next year?s edition of the biennial conclave to be hosted by Myanmar.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia yesterday clarified though that those concerned athletes to be recommended by their respective national sports associations must first signed an agreement with the agency that they agree to spend full-time to all the programs lined up for their training and needed international exposure to make it to their respective teams.
?This to make sure that the athletes chosen will be concentrating on their training 100 percent and not worry about something else, Garcia said. ?The will be rewarded amply though. Kumbaga, parang sports will be their means of livelihood na.?
?The NSAs concerned must submit to us their programs as to their athletes preparations, including training overseas,? Garcia said during the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
Garcia added during the forum, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA, athletes who do not belong to the SEA Games medalists but are believed to have the potentials to contribute to the country?s medal harvest can also join the national contingent on their own and be entitled to reimbursement should to eventually win.
?It?s a sort of fly now, pay letter scheme of some airline companies. But in our case, it?s pay now, be reimbursed later, a policy enforced in other countries, like Malaysia and Singapore for instance,? the PSC top man explained.
All these policies, according to Garcia, are aimed at ensuring that the country?s dismal sixth place finish in the 2011 Games held in Indonesia, won?t happen again. ?We have a personal directive from President Nonoy to improve on our performance the last time around.?
?And this is also the reason why we thought of prioritizing the sports, 10 of them, that we will be helping more? he said. ?The President?s instructions to us is to also win medals, especially gold, in the Asian Games, Olympic Games and world championships.?
Garcia was referring to athletics, swimming, boxing, taekwondo, billiards, archery, cycling, wrestling and bowling, chess, which have been allocated with from P8 million to P12 million financial
assistance by his agency.
Garcia disclosed that preparations for the Sea Games have already been going-on. ?We have started scanning the list of the last SEA Games medalists to be sure that they are still active,? he said.
?By the way this policy of prioritizing sports is a long-term program and not limited to the SEA Games but expanded to in clued Asian Games, Olympic Games, continental championships and world championships.
?This does not mean, too, that we are forgetting other sports, like team sports. We will also help them, but not as extensive compared to priority sports,? he said.
