Quadrilogy means a four-part series or a story of four episodes. And a rare boxing quadrilogy in modern era is about to happen on December 8. The only missing ingredient in the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fourth encounter is the contract signing. This was disclosed by Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions through Boxingscene.com.
Every Pacquiao-Marquez encounter is full of hullabaloo and argument. Marquez seemed to be Pacquiao?s kryptonite. The counter-puncher in ?Dinamita? is the antidote for the speed and power in ?Pacman.? Marquez aged like wine and would be a real threat in the dwindling Pacquiao knockout power. The contentious verdicts in all three fights continued hounding both fighters no end. Thus, the need for a fourth instalment, a fourth chapter, a quadrilogy.
During their first encounter, Pacquiao challenged Marquez, the WBA and IBF featherweight titleholder. The fight venue was MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, on May 8, 2004. After twelve rounds, the bout was scored a draw, and it angered both camps who claimed that they won the bout. The final scores were 115?110 for Marquez, 115?110 for Pacquiao and 113?113. Marquez was knocked down three times by Pacquiao in the first round but recovered in the later rounds.
On March 15, 2008 Pacquiao won by split decision during the rematch. The fight was held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Pacquiao won the fight and the WBC and The Ring superfeatherweight titles. It was a very close fight and it was Marquez who landed the most number of punches. But Pacquiao knocked him down in the third round with a left hook which proved to be the decisive part. The judges' scores were 115?112 for Pacquiao, 115?112 for Marquez and 114?113 for Pacquiao.
On November 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Pacquiao won over Marquez via majority decision with the scores 114?114, 115?113 & 116?112 of the three judges. It was another divisive decision as the Marquez fans once again claimed of being robbed of the victory. However, punch stats showed Pacquiao landing more blows, 176-138, and connecting more power punches, 117-100.
There are four famous quadrilogies in world boxing history. Sugar Ray Robinson, considered to be the best fighter pound-for-pound of all time, fought Jake LaMotta not only four, but six times. Bobby Chacon faced Bazooka Limon four times and they were memorable fights. Sandy Saddler is best known for his four-bout series with Willie Pep. While Henry Armstrong engaged in a five-fight encounter with Baby Arizmendi.
Sandler captured Pep?s featherweight title in their first bout. Pep then recaptured the crown on the second bout by outpointing Saddler over 15 rounds. Saddler regained the crown by a TKO in the eighth round in their third meeting. The last encounter was one of the dirtiest championship fights ever fought, Saddler won when the fight was stopped in the ninth round.
Arizmendi defeated Armstrong in their first of five meetings, winning almost every round. He defeated Armstrong once again on the rematch, to claim the California-Mexican world featherweight title. He subsequently lost the world title in his third bout. Despite losing the fourth fight on points, Arizmendi ended Armstrong's 27 fight knockout streak by going the distance with him. Armstrong won their fifth and last bout, a 10-round decision for the world welterweight title.
LaMotta knocked Robinson down in the first round of their first fight. Robinson got up and recovered, winning via unanimous decision. In the rematch, LaMotta won via unanimous decision, giving Robinson the first loss of his career. In their third encounter, Robinson was knocked down by LaMotta in round seven, but Robinson won the close fight by decision. A fourth fight took place and Robinson prevailed once again by a unanimous decision. In their fifth bout, Robinson triumphed in a very controversial split decision. Robinson said, "This was the toughest fight I've ever had with LaMotta." In the sixth fight, Robinson won convincingly by TKO in the thirteenth round.
In the first Chacon-Limon encounter, Limon won on a ten-round decision. The second bout was for the NABF superfeatherweight title, described as "the best rematch in boxing history.? A headbutt caused the fight to be stopped in round seven, resulting in a technical draw through the judges? scorecards. In the third bout, Chacon won by a ten round split decision. The last fight was ?The Ring Fight of the Year" with Limon, the WBC world junior lightweight champion, scoring two knockdowns, in the third and tenth round. Chacon rallied during the last five rounds, flooring Limon in round fifteen. Limon was able to get up, but the knockdown made Chacon a world champion again.
