World Boxing Council no. 2 strawweight Rodel Mayol will return to ring action on September 18 at the Pacifico in Yokohama, Japan against a soon-to-be-announced opponent.
This will be Mayol's first ring appearance since dropping a heart-breaking yet close unanimous decision to WBC 105-lb kingpin Eagle Kyowa last May 6 in Tokyo.
This was confirmed yesterday by Mayol himself in an interview with this writer, adding that he will fly to Japan on Friday to start his rigid preparation for the fight.
Set to accompany Mayol in the August 11 trip to Tokyo is trainer Carl 'Elbing' Pe?alosa Jr, who has taken the coaching reins from Brix Flores, the soft-spoken strategist who guided Malcolm Tu?acao to the WBC flyweight crown.
"Balik na mi og team work ni Coach Carl. Maayo unta swertehon og kaluy-an sa Ginoo," (I've hooked up again with Coach Carl. Hope we'll be lucky this time and God will help us), Mayol stressed, as he reconciles with Pe?alosa, who guided him to the OPBF title in late 2003 up to 2005.
Tu?acao, who like Mayol is being managed by Tokyo businessman Yasuo Matsuoka, is already in Japan serving as a sparring partner to ex-WBC superfly king Katsushige Kawashima.
Tu?acao is also set to see action on September 18, according to Mayol. The southpaw Tu?acao's training in Japan will now be handled by Japanese trainer Miura.
