ILOILO CITY -- The Games and Amusement Board (GAB) and the Iloilo Provincial Government through their respective leaders have pledged to continue supporting each other in terms of professional sports development here.
This was contained in the speeches delivered by both GAB Chairman Eric Buhain and Iloilo Governor Niel D. Tupas, Sr. who jointly inaugurated the GAB Iloilo extension office at the Liga ng mga Barangay building in Brgy. Magsaysay, La Paz district here last July 25.
“We shall continue to support each other in terms of promoting professional sports with the launching this morning (July 25) of the GAB extension office which will serve the Ilonggos,” declared Tupas who signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) that created the GAB Iloilo office with Buhain during the brief program attended by officials of the Liga ng mga Barangay Iloilo provincial office, professional sports leaders, media people, and retired athletes.
Buhain, for his part, thanked the governor and Board Member Angel Briones who is president of the Liga nga mga Barangay, for offering the groundfloor of the P2-million, three-storey building to the Makati-based sports regulating body supervised by the Office of the President.
Buhain, who is also former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), said the GAB’s relationship with the Iloilo Provincial Government will not end with the signing of the MOA as they will continue to provide technical support and training to local personnel who will manage the office.
“Our office will be the one to go to the people,” Buhain pointed out even as he exhorted local sports leaders in attendance to “create an idol” as an effective tool of attracting future Manny Pacquiaos from Iloilo.
Buhain and Commissioner Alex Paglumotan also awarded both Tupas and Briones with separate plaques containing the GAB Board Resolutions that extolled their “valuable efforts” to help promote professional sports in this part of the country.
Under the MOA signed by both parties, the provincial government shall provide the salaries of staffers in the sub-office while the GAB will shoulder the phone bills, among other office expenses.
Also present during the inauguration and signing of MOA were former Barotac Viejo mayor Myrna Casuing-Tupas, Iloilo Sports Complex administrator Francisco Heller, international boxing promoter Johnny Elorde and his wife Liza, Winners Gym executives Erwin Chiongson, Marlon Lumacad, and members of the board of the provincial Lig ng mga Barangay office.
