Earning a crack at a legit world crown will be the goal of up-and-coming Filipino Marlon Alta when he fights New Zealander Afakasi Pele Fumuina this Saturday at the Elorde Sports Center in Paranaque City.
The 10-round scuffle, presented by the Elorde International Promotions, will be for the vacant World Boxing Council youth international middleweight title, according to Alta?s manager-coach Archer Villamor during last Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
A victory by the 22-year-old Alta, who hails from General Santos City and owns a 11-2 win-loss record with 9 K0s, will line him up against world 160-pound belt-owner Sergio
Martinez, Archer told his audience during the forum, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA.
The fight against Faumuina, dubbed as ?Bakbakan sa Elorde,? will be Alta?s first against a foreign fighter although he said he is not wanting in international experience having fought as amateur for three years and prides himself of winning a silver medal once.
?Hindi napo naman ako bago sa international brand of fighting kasi ilang beses din naman akong nag-represent ng bansa sa international amateur competitions,? Alta said.
?At saka dito po naman gagawin ang laban at inaasahan ko naming i-cheer ako ng mga kababayan natin,? the tall, 5-foot-10 orthodox fighter said.
Alta received an extra blessing when Manny Pacquiao?s trainer Freddie Roach, who was also at the SCOOP session as the main guest congratulated him and bid him good luck for his coming fight.
