SONORA, MEXICO--Former champion Rodel Mayol yesterday vowed to become the third and concurrent Filipino flyweight king and complete a new triumvirate that will usher in a new age in Philippine boxing history.
Mayol, 29, and at the peak of his career, knows what it takes to win a world title especially when the odds are stacked against him. He flew in, together with his small team of supporters, right in the heart of his opponent's backyard, in a bid to dethrone WBA kingpin, the dreaded Hernan "Tyson" Marquez.
Fight night is Saturday, March 24, (Sunday noon in Manila) at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obregon, a city only a few miles from where the local wonder boy Marquez hails from. TV Azteca airs the match live, including another Filipino prospect, Richie Mepranum, who faces another up-and-coming warrior Juan Francisco "El Gallo" Estrada.
The musical chairs in the lower weight divisions continue to spin as Marquez tries to erase the stigma of two previous defeats at the hands of two Filipinos only recently.
Mepranum was first to put a blemish on Marquez's previously unbeaten record with a masterful show of boxing skills exactly two years ago, evading the power of the Mexican prodigy and scoring a win on points. Also, Nonito Donaire made it back-to-back losses for Marquez, who eventually made a stunning rebound after his knockout loss.
After only three more fights, Marquez finally became a champion again and has beaten a Filipino, Edrin Dapudong, in the process of defending his title. Marquez has vowed to repulse all comers and win especially in front of a partisan crowd.
Mayol, Batang Mandaue, is no stranger to challenges. He won his title three years ago by knocking out another Mexican champion, Edgar Sosa, in front of a stunned Chiapas, Mexico hometown, en route to winning the WBC light flyweight title.
"I have left no stone unturned and I have done my share in training hard for this fight," said Mayol, who has made a good account of himself against former world champion sparring partners in Cebu.
"I know that it is going to be hard for me to win on points alone so I have come prepared to win at all costs," added Mayol.
Currently, two Filipinos have won the WBC and WBO titles. Brian Viloria and Sonny Boy Jaro have scored wins only recently and a victory by Mayol will be the first of sorts for the country.
Mayol, whose career is also supported by pound-for-pound best fighter Manny Pacquiao, believes that trainer Raides "Nonoy" Neri has mapped out a perfect gameplan to negate Marquez's vaunted power.
