When it comes to lending support to his fellow fighters, pound-for-pound icon Manny Pacquiao is tops.
The Filipino superstar will once again prove that true when he departs for the United States on July 12 to lead the cheering team for Filipino Randy Suico, when the latter vies for the prestigious World Boxing Association lightweight title against undefeated Juan Diaz.
The dynamite-fisted Suico (24-2, 21 KO's) gets his first crack at a world title when he challenges the unbeaten Diaz (29-0, 14 KO's) in a 12-round showdown at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The fight, which will be aired live by Solar Sports on July 16, is the chief support to the Shane Mosley-Fernando Vargas rematch.
Meanwhile, the Mandaue City government yesterday announced that a big cash incentive awaits Suico should he successfully wrest the title from Diaz.
Mandaue's sports commission chairperson Cheryl Ouano revealed that Suico will be amply rewarded if he becomes the country's only world champion next week. Pacquiao, for all his popularity, holds only the WBC International title, but is
considered a superstar even without a legitimate world title belt.
Yesterday, Suico acquired for himself a new custom-made mouthguard from renowned ortho-dentist Ed De la Vega in Los Angeles, California.
Suico visited De la Vega's clinic, accompanied by his manager Joe Koizumi of Japan and trainer Juanito Ablaca.
De la Vega (tel. 818-348-8713), a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry and the Academy of Dentistry International.
He is better known for making the mouthpieces of superstar Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao, Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista, Z Gorres, and Czar Amonsot.
"I've never had one that fit so nicely and comfortably," Suico was quoted as saying after trying on his new set of mouthpiece, which bears the color of the Philippine flag.
Suico is a member of the original Golden Boys of Cebu boxing who turned pro under the guidance of Cebu sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer.
