BACOLOD CITY ? Philippine Olympic Committee chairman and Philippine Football Federation (PFF) advisory council member Monico Puentevella on Monday disclosed to the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines-Bacolod (SCOOP-Bacolod) that he is elated and humbled on his task to represent the Philippines in the world?s greatest and most powerful sports organization, the International Football Federation (FIFA).
This was after Puentevella was recently appointed by FIFA to the body?s powerful Marketing and TV Committee.
His appointment was affirmed in an official letter dated Dec. 30, 2011 from FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, who likewise stated that the world body looks forward to welcoming the Puentevella to Zurich, Switzerland as he assumes the position.
?It's very important that our country makes its presence felt in the realm of international football. I'm thankful to PFF under our President Nonong Araneta for giving me this trust and confidence as the only Filipino to be in this position. And to our Azkals for making a mark in Asia,? Puentevella told SCOOP-Bacolod.
The former Bacolod City representative said to be the only Filipino in recent years to be appointed to the prestigious sports organization. This will be Puentevella?s second time to serve FIFA after being a member of its Media Committee many years ago.
Meanwhile, Puentevella stressed that he is also looking forward to extend the football programs in Bacolod City. ?My position will deal with the World Cup primarily and the PFF in particular. There are also PFF officials in the province and our city so I would rather respect them. Though, I'm inclined to propose a VIZMIN tournament featuring only the teams of Negros, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Dumaguete and Iligan. This way, we can maintain consistency for our players and then challenge the winner of UFL in Manila to maintain our competitiveness. And this will prevent our players here not to move on to Manila to play this beautiful game,? the official explained.
