They may be up against a former world champion and a regional title holder of a prestigious WBO belt, but fighters of the TI Cebu Gym (otherwise known as Flores Gym) are confident they have what it takes to win their respective bouts tonight in the co-headliners of the "Back with a Vengeance" card at the Hoops Dome inLapu-Lapu City.
"We are up against two formidable fighters in Jhonriel Casimero and Jessie Albaracin. But in an event of a protracted battle, we are heavily counting on the scientific training we have been doing under the earlier supervision of Coach Chappy," divulged trainer Brix Florex to Philboxing.com at yesterday's official weigh-in held at the newly-opened JCenter Mall in Mandaue City.
Flores, who has produced world champions in the family's little gym in Mandaue City started by his late father Paciano "Pacing" Flores, was referring to conditioning trainer Chappy Callanta, who worked on his fighters and shared his expertise on the conditioning aspect during the taping of "Buhay Boksingero" segments months back.
"We have continued using Coach Chappy's conditioning regimen. It was given to us for free, and we are now enjoying the benefits. I don't predict victories, but my boys will be there until the last bell and that's for sure," added Flores.
Marvin Tampus, who trained under Flores for tonight's 12-round title bout for the prestigious WBO Oriental superbantam title, will be up against reigning champ Jessie Albaracin of Davao City in a fight that may still the thunder off the main event pitting ex-WBO champion Marvin Sonsona against Mexico's Carlos Jacobo.
"When we planned Albaracin's title defense, we always wanted to get somebody who can give him the toughest fight possible. We didn't want to give him somebody who would just pad his win column. We wanted a tough fighter from a tough gym and Marvin Tampus is that guy," informed promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who is working with TV-5's AKTV and Sampson Boxing LLC for tonight's show. "Albaracin vs Tampus has Fight of the Year written all over it," added the multi-awarded boxing promoter who is this year's recepient of the WBO Asia Pacific Promoter of the Year award to be held in Puerto Rico.
In another exciting match-up, TI Yamagata Sentillas who is also trained by Flores shoots for the stars when he trades leathers with former WBO interim junior fly world champion Jhonriel Casimero in a 10-round contest.
Sentillas, who may not have the stellar record of his more illustrious opponent, is on a three-bout winning streak capped by an unexpected easy victory over previously unbeaten Noel Adelmita last August 7 in Sibonga, Cebu.
"We know how good Jhonriel Casimero is, and how prepared he is for this comeback fight, but Sentillas is a tough nut to crack, and we have used the Callanta training program for his conditioning," informed Flores.
Meanwhile, AKTV through Mr. Vito Lazatin has announced at yesterday's press conference and weigh-in that it plans to be very active in showcasing Filipino talents, as it aims to do monthly shows starting next year, as well as quarterly big events all throughout 2012. The youthful television executive added that after a good start in theCavite event featuring Froilan Saludar, AKTV aims to be more active in giving Filipino fighters their much-needed exposure.
For tonight's show, first bout comes off the wraps at 6PM, while television viewers can watch the fights on AKTV on IBC 13 starting 9PM.
Other bouts on tap for the card pit Rey Labao against former Manny Pacquiao sparmate Dante Paulino; Jason Canoy against Rodel Quilaton; Weng Haya versus Eman Labanza; Jerry Nardo versus Ryan Illustrisimo; and Jessie Cris Rosales against Edison Serrano.
