A feverish Benedict Suico is given only a slight chance to unseat WBC International flyweight boss Monelisi Myekeni today in South Africa, but with the kind of power he packs in both hands, one mistake by the South African and it will be lights out.
Suico's manager Rex "Wakee" Salud revealed in a long-distance call yesterday that his ward has been suffering from fever due to tonsilitis hours before the fight was to take place at Johannesburg's Wembley Arena.
"He's got fever now, but I hope he will recover tonight," Salud informed.
At the weigh-in, Suico came in at 110. 2 lbs, while Myekeni tipped the scales at 110.5 lbs.
Suico is one of the three Filipinos seeking the WBC title in the mammoth "Parade of Champions" card put up by South African promoter Branco Milenkovic.
Another Filipino, Mercito Gesta, an undefeated super-bantamweight from Cebu, failed in his second medical test after passing an initial test last Tuesday, prompting officials and organizers to cancel his bout with WBC International featherweight champ Jeffrey Mathebula.
However, the third Filipino, undefeated Gabriel Pumar, is expected to fill in for the slack as he goes up against WBC International minimumweight Tshepo Lefele in a 12-round rumble.
Pumar weighed in at 103.7 lbs, while Lefele came in at 104 lbs at the weigh-in.
Three other bouts, featuring boxers from Chile, Russia and France, are on tap as they face separate South African WBC International title-holders.
