In an event usually reserved for weekends and Fridays, last night?s ?Bakbakan sa Alabang Part III? held at the parking lot across the Barangay Hall at Alabang Junction certainly turned out to be a ?Monday treat? to the boxing aficionados from this part of Metro Manila, courtesy of D. S. Almario Boxing Promotions in cooperation with Chairman Victor Ulanday and Barangay Council.
Climaxing this boxing extravaganza was the most exciting fight of the evening, the co-featured bout between Celso Danggod, the current WBE super-flyweight king, and former IBF Pan Pacific Junior Bantamweight Champion Joel Escol.
The first half of the fight was characterized by Escol initiating the action and Danggod assuming the role of a counter-puncher. While Escol appeared to have properly established his range, he did not seem to be hitting his mark accurately with many of his punches landing on or being caught between Danggod?s gloves. In contrast, Danggod?s well-timed counters were catching the face of Escol, usually while the latter was back-stepping after throwing his punches.
Fierce action escalated in the second half of the fight with both combatants pressing more and taking turns in delivering (and receiving) flurries of punches. While Escol was delivering the more pretty combinations, Danggod was the busier fighter going ?upstairs and downstairs? scoring a lot of clean shots of his own and actually had Escol in trouble in Rounds 8, 9, and 10. This allowed him to eked out a split decision win by the scores of 98-92, and 95-94, respectively, in his favor, and 96-93 in favor of Escol.
In the second co-main event, the current WBE Jr. Flyweight titleholder Jun Arlos (of the Victor Ulanday Stable) won a very nice technical fight against Danny Linasa of Cavite. By the start of the fourth round, it was evident that Linasa was beginning to succumb from Arlos? variety of shots. The fight was eventually stopped in 2 mins. 28 secs. of the 4th round due to the bleeding on Linasa?s cut resulting into an Arlos TKO win.
Rounding off the results:
Sonny Gonzalez won over Richard Laano (by a 5th round TKO after Dr. Nasser Cruz, the ringside physician, declared Laano unfit to continue due to the condition of the cut he suffered from accidental head-butt).
Dexter Mendoza won over Arnel Layson by UD.
George Salva won a most entertaining and close fight against Gil Abad by UD.
Cristelo Baluya won over James Balagon via a MD.
Jonathan Martos won over Renante Montero by a TKO in 2:12 of the first round.
