LUJAN KO?D MELLIGEN IN THE 9TH ROUND

Melligen?s hopes for a title were all dashed when he was knocked-out in the 9th round by Argentinian Sebastian Andres Lujan in their light middleweight at the Freeman Coliseum at San Antonio, Texas in front of 6,000 people in attendance and in the main event of the ESPN Friday Night Fights on July 1, 2011.
Lujan was true to his billing. Tough like a raging bull with a bronze body and a bald head that seemed like a rock of Gibraltar unmoved and unhurt by hundreds of punches thrown by Melligen.
The first three rounds were obviously belong to Melligen who fought according to their game plan. Fighting from the outside, throwing and connecting with jabs and left upper cuts to the head and right hooks to the body of Lujan. Lujan was like a bull with head down coming forward into Melligen trying to engage from the inside. Lujan was ineffective as Melligen pounded him and connected at will.
However, it was a different story in the fourth round as Lujan was teasing Melligen to come in as Lujan began his offensive. Melligen was caught with a series of head punches and stunned him incredibly. He got a taste of Lujan?s punches that seemed to weaken his knees. Melligen?s punches showed wear and tear that had no power. Lujan was moving in with lots of punches and forcing his opponent to the ropes where Lujan did all the damage.
In the 5th round, Melligen went to the game plan again fighting from the outside even Lujan kept on pushing Melligen to the ropes.
In the 6th round, Lujan threw a left jab followed with a right to the head of Melligen. Melligen went down slumped on the canvas with his upper body held by the ropes.
The overworked Melligen after throwing a lot of punches in the first three rounds lost his steam. The train just stopped hauling. Lujan on many occasions held Melligen by his right hand and with his free left hand kept on pounding Melligen to the head and body. Melligen tried to push Lujan away to get out of the huddles. But in doing so took a lot of his energy.
Lujan?s tactics seemed to exhaust Melligen.which was working as Melligen showed signs of just quitting. Lujan?s experience put a dent on Melligen?s talent who has never been knockdown in his American campaign with his prior 10 fights in America and Mexico as he never fought a rock, durable and tenacious boxer like Lujan. Lujan with his powerful right hand put Melligen again to the canvas in the 7th round and then in the 8th round as Melligen was saved by the bell. The final salvo came in the 45 second of the 9th round when Lujan connected with another right to the head. He followed this up with another right that hit Melligen?s left shoulder as Melligen was going down.
Melligen stayed flat on his back and the referee had to stop the fight and Melligen had to be attended by the ring doctor.
With a long distance call to Tony Martin, he assured the writer that Melligen was OK with just a headache but does not warrant to be taken to the hospital.
?Back to the drawing board,? Martin said.
In the undercard, American Mickey Bey, Jr. threw a powerful right hand that caught his Mexican opponent?s left face. Alejandro Rodriquez fell on the canvas with his left knee, followed with his right knee. He was able to stand up to beat the count but after few steps went down again by the ropes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight.
