Thailand's Waenpetch Chuwatana plans to shock local boxing fans when he faces Z "The Dream" Gorres on March 18 for the vacant OPBF superfly crown on March 18 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
It seems that the media hype on the impressive win of Gorres over Mexican toughie Jose Alfredo Tirado in Las Vegas last month has practically overshadowed the credentials of the man he has to beat to make his dream come true.
A grizzled veteran of 32 fights with a 23-7-2 win-loss-draw record with 14 knockouts, Chuwatana’s record is definitely nothing to scoff at – especially if one is to consider the quality of his opponents.
The 32-year old former OPBF champion has not lost a fight in his home court as his 7 losses were all inflicted in Japan while he has in return won four fights in the Land of Rising Sun and three of these victories were all title fights.
Another revealing fact is that he has fought only one Filipino, Gerard Ubatay whom he has decisively outpointed while most Thai fighters usually make Pinoy boxers their whipping boys.
When it comes to power, Chuwatana exudes a high 61% knockout percentage with 14 knockouts in 23 wins with most of his abbreviated triumphs coming in the first and second rounds.
The Thai’s championship experience is another factor the handlers of Gorres should consider seriously since Chuwatana has fought twice for the Thai Super Flyweight crown and six OPBF title fights while the young ALA ward has only fought twice for the Philippine title, one of which he suffered a devastating loss.
Not only does the Thai hitman Chuwatana has the edge on the number of fights, higher knockout percentage and championship experience, it must be noted that he also has a granite chin as h has never been stopped in 32 fights.
“Chuwatana is unlike other Thai fighters who have fought here. As his record speaks, he has the experience and the power to frustrate the dream of Gorres to win the OPBF title. This is going to be a bloodbath and a war,” said international promoter Sammy Gello-ani who expects another full-house during fight night.
This momentous boxing spectacle will be shown on a delayed telecast the next day on Viva Sports’ boxing program, MAIN EVENT, 1pm at RPN 9.
Tickets are now available at the USA Sports outlets in SM and Ayala and at the Fight Club in Banilad Town Center. Tickets are priced at Php 100 for General Admission, Php 250 for Lower Seat and Php 500 for VIP/Sponors.
