Mexican Twins Aim To Write Boxing History

Mexico City - Mexican twins Raul "Rayito" and Ramon "Hirales" Garcia will attempt to write history on Saturday, April 30, by becoming the first set of boxing twins to win world championship fights in the same card on the same night, and the second set of twins in history to be world champions at the same time..

Rayito, the smaller of the twins, holds the World Bloxing Organzation (WBO) miniflyweight crown which was recently vacated by Filipino Donnie Nietes and will defend it for the first time while Ramon will attempt to win the WBO Junior Flyweight title recently relinquished by American Giovanni Segura.

Should the 28-year-old twins win, they will become the second set of boxing twins who will reign as boxing champions at the same time and the first set of twins to win championship fights on the same night in the same event.

The first set of twins who became world champions at the same time was Thailand's Khaosai and Khaokor Galaxy. Khaosai won the World Boxing Assocition (WBA) superflyweight title in 1984 and held it until his retirement in 1992. Khaokor won the WBA bantamweight title in 1988 from Wilfredo Vasquez, lost it to South Korea's Sung Kil Moon, regained it in their rematch but eventually lost the title by a first round knockout to Filipino Luisito Espinosa on Oct. 18, 1989.

Khaosai and Khaokor as champions, however, never appeared in the same card to defend their titles at the same time.

And this is the boxing record that the Garcia Twins of Mexico will seek to write on April 30 in Foro Polcanco, Nuevo Mexico.

Standing in the way of history in the making are two foreign fighters, the young and diminutive Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo from the Philippines who is currently the WBO Oriental Champion, and tall and thin reed Jesus Geles of Colombia.

While Rayito is a clear favorite because of his experience (29 wins, 1 loss, 17 KOs), it will not be an easy assignment when he fights the 21-year-old power puncher from the Philippines who holds a record of 20 wins, 2 losses and 16 knockouts. Against a fellow southpaw who holds an impressive knockout percentage, Rayito is expected to use the ring and score points to retain his title.

It will be a tougher assignment for the bigger twin, Ramon, who will figure in a rematch with Geles, who defeated the Mexican fighter by Split Decision when they fought in Colombia for Ramon's WBO Interim Junior Flyweight title earlier this year. It was that victory that gave Geles the regular WBO junior flyweight title on a silver platter after reigning title Giovanni Segura relinquished the title.

But whether the Mexican twins both wn their fights on Saturday, they would still make history, albeit of lesser luster, for being the first boxing twins to fight for world championship titles in the same event on the same night.
