PNoy salutes sports centennial

President Benigno ?Noynoy? Aquino III acknowledged the significance of the 100th year of organized sports in the country. The President commended the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) for honoring and recognizing the Filipino athletes who have brought honor to the country for the past 100 years.
?By giving due recognition to the great Filipino athletes in your roster, to celebrate their dedication and inspiring vigor, as well as their significance in the history of Philippine Sports,? the Chief Executive said in a message sent to SCOOP president Eddie Alinea through assistant executive secretary John Michael Co who is also the head of Malacanan?s correspondent office.
President Aquino saluted SCOOP?s Century Sports Awards honoring 100 Great Filipino athletes from where the ?Greatest Filipino Athletes of the Century? will be named in a grand Awards Night on May 25 at One Esplanade, SM Central Business Park in Pasay City.
According to Alinea, the SCOOP Century Sports Awards, his association?s share in the celebration of this historic event, will be a grand party of the millennium that will trace the heroics of the finest 100 athletes the country had produced since organized sports was established. The event will be hosted by PBA cager Alex Crisano, events organizer Roselle Taberna, sports commentator Chino Trinidad and comedienne Rufami.
The Awards Night is a product of years of research and examination of sports from Regino Ylanan to Manny Pacquiao. Ylanan won three gold medals in the inaugural Far Eastern Games by ruling the shot put, discus throw and pentathlon events, earning the title Asia?s first ?Man of Steel.? Manny Pacquiao is the only man to win eight world boxing titles in as many weight divisions, earning for him the title world?s pound-for-pound king.
Among the expected awardees are Robert Jaworski, JB Baylon, Benjie Paras, and James Yap for basketball, and Rey Fortaleza and Onyok Velasco for boxing. Former Senator Nikki Coseteng, Manny V. Pangilinan, Mike Arroyo, Susan Papa, among others, will be given Special Awards for being sports advocates.
?I commend you for your efforts to enshrine the legacy of our athletes, who count among or modern-day heroes, for they have contributed much to our country?s glory,? P-Noy?s message stressed.
?These athletes have truly given meaning to the ?play for everyone? slogan of the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation that SCOOP has adopted,? the son of the late Sen. Benigno Aquino and former President Cory Aquino added.
The creation of the PAAF in 1911 opened the gate for both amateur and professional Filipino athletes to play against and among the best in Asia and the world. They dominated the Far Eastern Games, forerunner of the now Asian Games, two years later and boxer Pancho Villa became the first from the country and Asia to win a world boxing championship.
?As we walk on the straight and righteous path to our nation?s transformation, I urge you (SCOOP) to continue upholding the discipline and commitment that have been demonstrated time and again in the field of sports,? the President, a shooting enthusiast, said in his message.
?This is not just about breaking records and winning medals, but also withstanding the challenges and trials on the road to victory,? he continued. ?Let us all work as one team, illuminated by the era of daylight as we aim for the lofty prize of a better, more progressive Philippines,? the President said.
The SCOOP?s Council of Leaders, composed of the association?s past presidents, senior sports editors and leading sports columnists will come up with the final list of nominees soon. #
