Gerry Pe?alosa fought for one last time and won against Yodsaenkeng Kietmangmee of Thailand on October 10, 2010. He will share the proceeds of the match to Z Gorres as assistance for his medical expenses. The boxing event was dubbed "Golpe Golpe na Zamboanga: The Last Hurrah," was held at the Zamboanga City Coliseum. The former two-time world champion won the bout by TKO in the 4th round.
But after his sweet victory, it was reported that Oscar de la Hoya called him up to congratulate him and offered him to fight at the Staples Center this coming December. If Pe?alosa would bite the tempting offer, then it?s going to be another comeback fight from a supposed last fight for the man considered as a reliable defensive boxer and an effective counter-puncher.
Pe?alosa traversed 21 years of boxing with a professional record of 55 wins, with 37 knockouts, 8 losses and 2 draws.
He was born Geronimo Pe?alosa on August 7, 1972 in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. He is a former holder of the WBC super flyweight and the WBO bantamweight titles. His older brother, Dodie Boy Pe?alosa, is also a former two-time world champion.
Pe?alosa has never been knocked down in his entire boxing career. He lost by TKO for the first time in his career to Juan Manuel Lopez. But the fight was stopped only after his corner threw in the towel. According to legendary trainer Freddie Roach, Pe?alosa is the best technical boxer ever from the Philippines, due to his tactical fighting technique and excellent footwork.
He captured the WBC super flyweight title with a decision win over Hiroshi Kawashima in 1997. He defeated Bangsaen Sithpraprom for the lesser known WBF super flyweight title in 2004.
In 2007, the veteran boxer fought Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico for the WBO bantamweight title in Sacramento, California. Pe?alosa reduced in weight to dethrone the Mexican fighter by a knockout in the 7th round.
In 2008, he defended the title in Quezon City by stopping former world title holder Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand in the eighth round, winning over the Thai fighter for the second time in as many fights.
After the fight with Lopez, Pe?alosa contemplated on quitting saying he has nothing more to prove in boxing. He was later stripped of his world bantamweight title for failing to defend it within one year.
On February 13, 2010, Pe?alosa faced Eric Morel of Puerto Rico for the interim WBO bantamweight title in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pe?alosa eventually lost the bout by a controversial split decision. Many people saw Pe?alosa winning the fight, including his good friend Manny Pacquiao. Two judges scored the fight 115-113 and 116-112 for Morel, while the third judge scored the bout 113-115 for Pe?alosa. FightFan.com scored 115-113 for Pe?alosa.
The boxer they call ?Fearless? will surely be missed in the boxing world if the curtains would continue to close on the career of another Philippine boxing legend.
