TANADA THRIUMPHANT OVER OCAMPO IN TANZA WAR

Call it a ?no-holds-barred? fight but it was exactly like that when Allan Tanada and Jose Ocampo engaged in a furious battle last Saturday night in the main bout of the event billed as ?The Next Prospects IV? as they contested for the WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight youth title at the Ayarata Sports Complex, Tanza, Cavite.
The two warriors literally had the paying fans enjoy the value of their money?s worth, even at a premium, as they were going at each other?s throat each and every inch of the way. Bombs thrown by each side that could easily deck any lesser mortal would be met with defiance ? by not going down or, to put it more ironic, by not being stunned. Instead, just when the crowd expects that someone to go down, that one would come back to drop heavy shots of his own. In the end, the old adage that ?only one man will come out the winner? proved true and at this given night, it was Tanada who emerged victorious via a split decision (96-94 and 97-93 for Tanada in two judges? scorecards and 96-94 for Ocampo in the scorecard of the third judge). Thus, Tanada captured his first professional boxing title by being the new WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight youth champion. Though Ocampo was at the other side of the decision, the way he fought the fight may not bring him back to the drawing board but is expected that he remain a contender for other titles.
There was a little sighing from the crowd when an accidental head-butt in the 5th round opened a huge gash above Ocampo?s left eye. Fortunately, it was ruled (upon the advise of the ring physician) that the cut was not serious enough to justify stopping the fight, albeit, the entertainment.
In the supporting main event, Rey Labao defeated Jaypee Ignacio via a close unanimous decision in their 10-round super-featherweight fight (96-94 in each of the three judges? scorecards). Heavy favourite on paper, Labao, after having a hard time penetrating the defence of Ignacio in the early rounds, began connecting more as the rounds progressed although his tentativeness prevented him from inflicting more damage on Ignacio who was able to keep the scores close with his counterpunching.
The rest of the bouts:
Arnel Dunal scored two knockdowns before the referee halted the fight for a 4th round TKO win over Cris Alag in their lightweight bout scheduled for 8 rounds;
Edward Penerio, who attacks like a Denver Cuello, ferociously put Michael Rodriguez under pressure en route to winning a UD (77-75, 78-74, and 79-73) in their 8-round junior flyweight bout;
Rodynie Rafols put a technically sound performance to defeat Cirilo Espino via a UD (79-73, 80-72, 78-74) in a rather lacklustre 8-round junior-featherweight fight;
Adonis Cabalquinto lived up to his name by looking good for 6 rounds in defeating a rather bloated William George via a unanimous decision (60-53 twice, and 59-54);
Froilan Saludar displaying fine boxing technique, proved superior to a game Salvador Layson, defeating the latter via a 4th round TKO in a 6-round junior flyweight bout;
Jerwin Ancajas made short work of Rodney Quizon staggering the latter all over the place before the referee mercifully stopped the punishment in 2:17 seconds of the 1st round of a flyweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds;
Tanza-based Ricky Uyan made the crowd proud scoring a knockdown in the first round en route to winning a majority decision (39-36, 38-37, and 38-38) over Angelo Marcial in their 4-round minimum-weight bout in what appeared to be a mild upset;
Conrado Tanamor utilized his acquired amateur skills to the full in outclassing a rather reserved Jonathan Antor en route to winning via a UD (40-36 in all three judges? scorecards) in their 4-round junior-flyweight bout; and
Unbeaten prospect Dennis Tubieron used his height and reach advantage to jab his way to victory over the veteran Allan Ranada via a UD (58-56 twice, and 59-56) in their 6-round super-flyweight bout;
Joan Imperial and Benezer Alolod were slugging it out when a couple of accidental head-butts resulted into a cut on each boxer which then ended in a technical draw in the 3rd round of a minimum-weight bout scheduled for 6 rounds;
Conrado Tanamor utilized his acquired amateur skills to the full in outclassing a rather reserved Jonathan Antor en route to winning via a UD (40-36 in all three judges? scorecards) in their 4-round junior-flyweight bout; and
Carlos Suelo stopped Miguel Royo in 1:58 of the first round in the opening bout of the evening in a junior-featherweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds.
