If plans dont miscarry, newly-crowned World Boxing Council light flyweight champ Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria will find himself defending the title for the first time against ex-WBC minimumweight kingpin Jose Antonio Aguirre on February 17 in Las Vegas.
The February 17 playdate was confirmed yesterday by a media release sent by Top Rank, which promotes Viloria, while Aguirre's name was floated by reports coming from Mexico.
"My manager, Erik Morales, has already informed me that he will be there when I face Viloria," Aguirre told mediamen during a lull in his training at the Pancho Rosales Gym in Mexico.
Aguirre also mentioned that this fight was originally scheduled to take place on December 31 in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, but HBO decided to move it to February.
The unbeaten 25-year-old Viloria (18-0, 12 KO's), who took the WBC title with a shock upset victory over Eric Ortiz, reportedly plans on defending his title multiple times before moving up in weight, possibly as a flyweight.
"A fight with Jorge Arce is definitely an option I'm looking at," Viloria said, in a report by 15rounds.com, referring to dangerous Mexican who holds the interim WBC flyweight crown.
Viloria said he will he will return to the Wild Card Gym in LA before the Christmas and New Year Holiday rush, where he will immediately resume training under Freddie Roach.
Aguirre, nicknamed "El Jaguar," holds a record of 33-4-1, 20 KO's and held the WBC 105-lb title from 2000 to 2004.
