LOS ANGELES—Manny Pacquiao once again appealed to some members of Philippine media to stop peddling lies and keep unverified reports to themselves first before writing to cut down on added distractions before he plunges into serious training soon.
Right after leaving Los Angeles Wednesday night unannounced, Pacquiao is expected to go straight from the Manila International Airport to General Santos City to be with his family before he starts training in Davao City.
"There will be many changes. I want to train in secrecy because this coming fight in January is the most important among all my other battles. I don't want to hear anything and get silly distractions from people who don't know the real score," said Pacquiao in Tagalog.
Pacquiao referred to published articles from respected columnists that there was trouble brewing in his camp and that people around him were exploiting him, even mentioning that a $5,000 sum was missing or stolen from his bank account.
"That is a fat lie," said Pacquiao, who decided to be more scant in the public eye from now up until fight night. "The writer should have asked or called me first before writing that article because I deserve to get heard. Secondly, he has destroyed somewhat the reputation of the people that I trust by believing in the story of others." Pacquiao sent a text message to the columnist, asking for a verification even as he showed displeasure.
"He even called my trusted friend a usurer? What was his basis? The story of others?," asked Pacquiao.
Pacquiao laughed at the same column which stated that Erik Morales, the Mexican who will be on the other corner of the ring on January 21,2006, has started to train "two weeks after he lost to Zahir Raheem."
"We have talked to members of Morales' camp and curiously, he is just about to start training in the next few weeks, too. Funny, the guy just got married last October," said Pacquiao.
Pacquiao was incensed with the insinuation that he has been taking training preparations lightly while his opponent has been diligent with regards to his career. "The guy probably doesn't know that if you train too long, you might get burned out," said Pacquiao.
Trainer Freddie Roach believes that should Pacquiao show up in training on the first week of December, there will be more than ample time to get the Filipino in tip-top shape.
"I will do everything in my power to win this fight even if I die fighting on top of the ring. These people do not even know me well. They say I spend too much time in the cockpit and in billiard tables and I lose much money in the process. Tell, me, what is their business? I hope they see me literally killing myself in training so that they will understand more about how much I want to win for my country, my family and all of my fans," said Pacquiao.
"People should understand that there is a time for everything. There is a time to play, there is a time to earn extra bucks, then there is the time for the "office." If I go cockfighting or spend late nights playing pool while in training, then that is a bad habit that should be stopped."
"Then don't be surprised if I don't allow myself to get interviewed by members of media from now on," added Pacquiao.
