Waiting for Dapudong

Bruce Mctavish, Rick Staheli and the Angeles City boxing buffs filled the cooler with beer, Edward Ligas and his group in Cebu City were all set, former congressman Jun Pinol had all of the boys around the television set in Quezon City while relatives and friends in M'lang, North Cotabato rested the carabaos for the day to watch the much-awaited airing of the Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong-Jesus "Destroyer"Jimenez World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight Silver Championship staged in Tepic, Mexico last June 19.
It has been announced that the video of the fight will be shown on ABS CBN Studio 23 at 11 a.m. July 3, that's today.
But as the clock ticked past 11 a.m., there was no boxing bout on Studio 23. Reason: minor administrative kinks, prevented the airing of the fight.
Recah Trinidad, my bosom friend who wrote a beautiful column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer today about the airing of the fight, was furious. "Nagmukha tayong gago, pare."
Me? I was red-faced, disappointed and deeply embarrassed.
Who's to blame? Well, me! I have to admit that I still have this hangover from the days when I was Governor where all that I needed to do was to give out instructions to a very professional staff and everything would be accomplished without any klinks.
And so when the initial airing date of July 3 was confirmed by Studio 23, announcements were made.
Little did I realize that I was no longer dealing with an efficient and very professional group that made things possible based on simple instructions.
The video material that was supposed to be previewed to get an MTRCB clearance was delivered to Studio 23 earlier this week. Problem? It was given to an understudy in the studio who failed to submit it to his boss for preview.
And so, since there was no material submitted, no broadcast contract was prepared. All the while I was made to believe that everything was going smoothly.
Then came the shocker. This morning, my friend Louie Lamata who has been helping me with the legwork called up and told me that the material could not be aired.
I tried to pull some strings and called up ABS CBN vice president Peter Musngi who tried to do something at the last minute. But then again, there was that problem of the absence of the MTRCB permit.
"We can't do it without the MTRCB permit. That's the rule," Peter said and I perfectly understood, especially now that President Noynoy has said that rules must be followed.
The consolation though is that Peter has assured that there will be a new airtime for the Dapudong-Jimenez fight and this will be on July 10, Saturday, at 11 a.m.
To the boxing fans who waited, I am truly sorry and I apologize. I hope I could refund the beer money that you used up today.
Never mind. I assure you that the fight is worth a week of waiting on July 10, Saturday, at 11 a.m
