
Pinoy amateurs beat pro counterparts in box-off

Host Philippines stands to field a strong team in the coming Manny V. Pangilinan International Boxing Championships as gauged by the results of the box-off held the other week in La Trinidad Valley, Benguet.
All member of the national training pool ? 12 in the men?s division and five in the women?s side -- aspiring for memberships for slots teams the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is fielding in the seven-nation competition won over their professional counterparts in the box-off held June 12 at the typhoon-ravaged city.
Some of the pros members of the training team faced are rated contenders for the RP championships in their respective divisions and are already fighting in 10-round bouts, giving the nationals bright hopes to give ABAP chair Manny V. Pangilinan a great birthday present. Pangilinan, head of the vast telecommunications conglomerate that includes PLDT and Smart, is celebrating his birthday on the boxfest?s opening on July 14.
Ricky Dulay of Samar caught the biggest fish in the one-day box-off edging RP no. 7 contender Jilio Merlin, 3-2, in their 57-kilogram encounter.
Not to be outdone, Glicerio Catolico III of host La Trinidad and Jameboy Vicera, likewise, showed the way over their rated opponents with the former emerging victor over RP no. 10 challenger Joey Rafols in a lopsided 5-0 decision, in their 54-kg. clash.
Vicera, competing out of bago City in Negros Occidental, likewise, never gave no,. 13 contender Jaybee Alipio any room in their 57-kg. fight, duplicating Catoloco?s 5-0 victory.
Other amateur victors in the box-off that served as part of the tryouts for RP team membership are Ian Clark Bautista over Rey Loreto, Roger Ladon over Vilbert Andogan and Bill vicera over Macra Gandionco, all in 48-kg. category; Crisanto Godaren over Brian Deano and Gerson Nietes over Dayer Gabutan in the 51-kg. class; Bonifacio Fernando over Roy Sumile in the 54-kg. division; Joegin Ladon over Randy Megrenio in the 60-kg; Jimmy Vallares over Piayas Guzman and Wilfredo Lopez over Dennis Padua , both in the 64-kg. level.
?The victories by our amateur boxers over their pro counterparts only indicate that our preparations for the MVP Cup and our reinvigorated youth-oriented and mass-based development program as part of the roda to winning the country?s first Oilympic gold medals, indeed, in place, ? ABAP president Ricky Vargas said.

Other women?s division winners are Prayjie Baja over Wennie Cline Verano in 48-kg.; Karina Jane Recaido over Maricris Igam and Naome Taeda over Mihca Jo Hugo, both in the 57-kg. class.
