It seems that every fight is a perennial test for the teenage boxing champion, Rey ‘Boom-Boom’ Bautista since the day he won the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title last August 17, 2004.

The 18 year-old boxing phenom has hurdled six tough and formidable opponents by stopping five of them with only the African iron-jaw Vuyisile Bebe lasting the distance.

Bautista first ignited the fire with one round kayo of then WBA-PABA No. 1 contender Christian Kasino of Indonesia but had to contend with a 12-round hard-earned decision over Bebe.

The next trial was a fight in Honolulu, Hawaii where the Boholano warrior broke the jaw of Aree Phosuwangym of Thailand and stopped him in the 5th round – only to follow this up with another smashing win over Gilberto Bolanos of Mexico who quit and failed to out in the 6th round.

The ultimate test however came when the former poor boy from Candijay, Bohol won the plaudits of both the local and international boxing fans when he disposed Felix Flores Murillo of Colombia in three rounds at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California.

His triumphant parade to fame will again be put into another test when Bautista faces another tough challenger when he defends his WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title on November 19, 2005 in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Handpicked by no less than Leon Panoncillo, the WBO Asia-Pacific president, the mandatory challenger will once again come from Africa, Obote “The Thunder” Ameme of Tanzania who will undoubtedly be expected to give the youthful gladiator another tough test.

“I have mandated Rey Bautista to defend his title to Obote Ameme as the mandatory challenger because he is more than deserving as the challenger. It will be a tough test for Bautista because he is facing a fighter who is strong and tough,” confides the WBO head, Panoncillo.

If only to showcase the formidability of the challenger, Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, made this assessment, “If ever Bautista has to lose a fight – I would rather that it happens here in Bohol among his paisanos but I believe that the Pride of Bohol will not let this happen. I predict Boom-Boom to win.”

The historic event in Tagbilaran City feature a double WBO Asia-Pacific championship has the full support of Governor Aumentado and the Provincial Government of Bohol and as well as the City Government of Tagbilaran.
