The much-awaited elimination bout between World Boxing Council no. 1 minimumweight Rodel Mayol and no. 2 Lorenzo "Explosivo" Trejo will take place on January 28 in Cancun, Quintana Roo in Mexico.

The fight, which was discussed at the recent WBC Convention in
Conception, Spain, was finalized and made official after representatives of both fighters reached an agreement to hold the fight on the said date and venue, said sources from Mexico when interviewed by Box-latino.

The winner of the fight will move on to challenge current WBC 105-lb champion Eagle Kyowa, a power-punching Thai who moveed to Japan following the death of his Thai manager Soomphop.

Reports from Mexico indicated that the bout will be held under the auspices of the "Night of Champions," which was originally slated in December but postponed to January due to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Wilma.

The undefeated Mayol (21-0, 16 KO's), holder of the OPBF minimumweight title, is currently training in Japan, but is expected to arrive in the country on November 20 to join his family for the Christmas holidays.

Trejo, a native of Ciudad Obregon, and holder of the NABF minimumweight title, holds a record of 24-12, 11 KO's.

Mayol's manager, Japanese Yasuo Matsuoka, is grooming his prized ward for a crack at the WBC title of Kyowa should he get past the veteran Trejo.
