PACQUIAO WILL NOT CRAM THIS TIME, SAYS SALUD

Pound-for-pound great Manny Pacquiao will not make the mistake of cramming for his next fight, and will be in tremendous shape when the bell rings for his mammoth return showdown with Mexican icon Erik "El Terrible" Morales on January 21 in Las Vegas.

This was the assurance made yesterday by renowned boxing promoter Wakee Salud, Pacquiao's close associate, who visited the Filipino hero in General Santos City the other day.

In an interview with the Inquirer yesterday, Salud also bared that he will be leaving with Pacquiao on November 11 for the United States to take part in the promotional tour arranged by Top Rank to drum up interest for the mega-fight. The deal calls for Pacquiao and Morales to visit several key cities in the United States and Mexico, presumably to strengthen pay-per-view sales for the bout.

"I flew to GenSan the other day to see for myself if he has already started running. Yes, he is doing just fine," Salud, himself a manager of three past world champions, said yesterday.

After the promotional tour, Pacquiao and Salud are expected to be back in the country on November 18, as the Filipino star is set to start rigid preparations right away.

"He will head straight to General Santos after arrival, then fly to Cebu immediately to start training possibly for a week," added Salud, who picked out the ALA Gym of sportsman Tony Aldeguer as a possible venue for Pacquiao's training sessions considering its top-of-the-line equipment and facilities.

Renowned trainer Freddie Roach, according to Salud, might opt to fly with Pacquiao to the Philippines to personally oversee his ward's Cebu training.
