To further strengthen the country?s quest for its first ever Olympic gold medal, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines has formed a five-boxer super elite group that will be undergoing a special training program.
Featherweight Charly Suarez, flyweight Rey Saludar and younger brother Victor Saludar, head the special group to be handled by Barcelona Olympic games bronze medallist Roel Velasco.
Asian Indoor Games gold medallist Annie Albania of the national women?s team, and up-coming junior campaigner Mark Anthony Barriga round up the elite team that will undergo a training regimen that will focus on top level performance in the coming Asian Games in November up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Suarez, it can be remembered, was earlier chosen as member of a 14-athlete group sponsored by the G4-S Security Systems Specialists of England.
Like Suarez, Picson disclosed, the Saludar brothers, Albania and Barriga will also be recipient of parts of the G4-S special training program, Picson said.
The formation of the super elite group is actually one of two steps ABAP, under the leadership of chair Manny V. Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas, is undertaking in the immediate next two months as part of the roadmap to the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China and eventually the London Olympics.
Slated July 14-19 in Manila is the First Manny V. Pangilinan International Friendship Cup, which, incidentally, is in answer to a popular clamor to revive the prestigious Mayor?s Cup that has been mothballed for almost a decade since its last staging in the late 90s.
?Yes, the MVP Cup is in answer to clamor we have been receiving to revive the Mayor?s Cup initiated by then Manila Mayor Mel Lopez and continued by, among others Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn,? Picson said.
Five countries have already signified their intentions to take part ? China, the emerging world power in boxing in the world, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Mongolia ? in the series that will involved competitions in the 48 kgs., 51, kgs., 54, kgs., 56 kgs., 60 kgs., 64 kgs. and 69 kgs in the men?s division.
To be disputed in the distaff side are the 46 kgs., 48 kgs., 51 kgs., 54 kgs, and 57 kgs. The Philippines will fielding its Team A and Team B.
International Amateur Boxing Association President, Dr.. Ching Kuo Wu of China, Asian Boxing Confederation head Chang Jian Ping and executive director Richard Guo Zhing have also confirmed their presence as guests.
Venue of the competitions will still be decided although Picson said it will either be at the Philippine International Convention Center or at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum
