CANILLAS KEEPS HIS KO STREAK GOING

Super bantamweight Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas was on song and kept his knockout win streak going with a second round stoppage of Dexter Mendoza in the ?Best of Boxing I? card at the Mandaue Sports Complex Saturday evening.
The hard-hitting and aggressive Canillas went after the lanky and taller Mendoza from the opening bell and although Mendoza tried to occasionally use his reach advantage to keep Canillas away, there was no stopping the colorful fighter from boring in.
After visibly hurting Mendoza with some solid body shots Canillas suddenly exploded with a hard right that caught Mendoza flush on the eye. Mendoza who appeared to be scared of Canillas stepped back for a moment and then went down clutching his eye and watched as the referee counted him out at 1:25 of the second round.
The win improved the record of Canillas to 13-2 with 11 knockouts while Mendoza dropped to 11-8-2 with 4 knockouts. It was Mendoza?s second successive stoppage having earlier lost by a 4th round TKO to WBC International super flyweight champion Sylvester Lopez last March 27.
Canillas was coming off back-to-back knockout wins this year. He dropped Thailand?s Petch Twins Gym for the full count in round two of a fight at the Waterfront Hotel last January 14 and then on April 23 in Dubai stopped tough African Fred Sayumi who was battered before a badly swollen left eye through which he could hardly see forced Tayumi to quit at 1:04 of the 6th round.
Rugged southpaw Jayson Rotoni whose fight against former WBC and WBA minimum weight champion Katsunari Takayama had to be called off two days before after the Japanese met with a freak accident while jogging and hurt his right hand which swelled up found a worthy opponent in 26 year old Arnold Tadena who was prepared to stand and often slug it out with Rotoni.
The constant aggression in the end proved too much for Tadena and an accidental clash of heads saw Cebu Games and Amusements Board ringside physician Dr. Jose Unabia recommend the stoppage at 1:10 of the 5th round.
All three judges scored the fight for Rotoni with Edgar Olalia turning in a shutout at 50-45 with Noel Flores and Salven Lagumbay submitting identical scorecards of 49-46. Rotoni, who is rated No. 9 by the GAB improved to 11-5-1 with 6 knockouts while the game Tadena fell to 8-6-3 with 4 knockouts.
In an interesting bantamweight battle promising Rolito Gasca scored a unanimous ten round decision over Jessie Albaracin of the Tony Dacer stable of Davao.
Although Albaracin, a southpaw, tried to bore in and use his power to advantage having 9 knockouts in 11 wins to only one KO in 11 wins by Gasca, he was often caught with some excellent counter-punches.

While Gasca on a few occasions nailed Albaracin with some clean blows that rocked his head back he never appeared to be hurt and would promptly fight back. In the end Gasca recovered from his only loss, a split decision setback to Albert Alcoy last February 5 to get his career back on track with a good decision.
Judge Salven Lagumbay saw the fight as a close one and gave it to Gasca 95-94 while Edwin Barrientos had Gasca the winner by a wider 96-93 margin and Noel Flores by an even wider 97-92.
In other bouts, the entertaining Jun ?Flash? Intor lost by a technical decision to Mark Jesson Taroja who was able to land the cleaner blows against the wild and wooly Intor who was once again cut in a clash of heads, while Marjhun Makahalig won a unanimous eight round decision in a rematch against Elbert Guardario with all three judges scoring it 79-73 for Makahilig, the fighter from Cagayan de Oro.
In a super bantamweight four rounder southpaw Joy Pol won over Jamjam Ungon while in the curtain raiser southpaw Jicky Gaco won by a TKO at 1:24 of the first round against Carlito Solante who was making his pro debut. Gaco who lost by a 1st round TKO in his pro debut against Jefferson Reodeque last February 20 was visibly overjoyed to score his first win.
