MELLIGEN?S CHANCE OF REDEMPTION: Rematch with erstwhile tormentor Michel Rosales set on July 3

Tony Martin, the Las Vegas based trainer of Top Rank Promotions? Filipino welterweight prospect, Mark Jason Melligen just informed me that he had just emerged from a meeting with Top Rank Promotions regarding Melligen?s next fight.

It is 99.5% chance that Melligen has to sweat it out a little bit harder to break the top echelon of the welterweight division. Melligen celebrated his 24th birthday on April 6 with a lopsided win against top opponent, Mexican Norberto Gonzales on April 10, 2010 at the Joint at Hard Rock Casino. After their fight, Melligen and Gonzales both have the same record of 18 wins with 2 loses each. However, Melligen has 13 knockouts while Gonzales has 12 knockouts under their belts that attested that both possess power punches.

So far, Melligen fought a total of 7 consecutive fights in a span of a little over 13 months or an average of almost 1 fight every 2 months since his first campaign in America on March 7, 2009 until his last fight on April 10, 2010. With these 7 fights, he has an impressive record of 6 wins, 4 by TKO and 2 by UD with only one lost against Mexican Michel Rosales on a split decision. That was a dent he paid dearly as he has to claw back to contention and show to Top Rank and boxing fans that he has what it takes to be a world class boxer or future champion.

Melligen has another chance of redemption on his only lost in America by fighting Rosales, the Mexican boxer who beat him via a split decision and who teach him a lesson or two on aggressive Mexican boxing style. This is a rematch that is fair for both Melligen and Rosales and will be scheduled to happen in Reno, Nevada on July 3, 2010. Melligen has to prove that he lost because of a forced mental condition brought about by Filipino compatriot Z Gorres? collapsed in the ring prior to Melligen?s match with Rosales on November 13, 2009 at Mandalay Bay?s House of Blues. Besides, it was a split decision that could go either way.

On the other hand, Rosales has to prove that his win against Melligen was no fluke and was a result of his aggressive style and boxing skills that Melligen could not match.

If Melligen wins the rematch, there is hope that Top Rank could line him up to fight in an eliminator bout for any welterweight championship belt. As such, this is a fight that will determine Melligen?s future.
