ARUM ARRIVES THURSDAY TO MEET WITH PACQUIAO

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum arrives in Manila early Thursday morning from Las Vegas aboard a Philippine Airlines fight and will take a connecting flight to General Santos City to meet with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

When asked whether he was discussing anything particular with Pacquiao, Arum jokingly replied ?how to win the election.?

Pacquiao is in the homestretch of a demanding campaign to try and overcome the challenge posed by the candidate of the wealthy Chiongbian clan who have controlled politics in Sarangani for decades.

Pacquiao?s charming wife Jinkee has, by all accounts from the field, been a great asset in the tough campaign for the lone congressional seat in Sarangani. Jinkee and her family are from Sarangani and that is expected to be a plus.

Despite his refusal to discuss boxing with Pacquiao, Arum earlier indicated to us that they were not prepared to make any concessions to Floyd Mayweather Jr in order to get a megabuck fight going later this year.

He said they are standing pat on a 50-50 split and random blood tests up to 24 days before the fight.

At the same time Arum downplayed the performance of Mayweather who scored a lopsided decision over a badly ageing Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand last Saturday before a crowd that was less than what the Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight drew and not the sell-out Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had predicted.

Even the 4 million pay-per-view number that Schaefer bandied about and was described as ridiculous were nowhere near what was expected with early reports indicating it would do between 1.1 to 1.2 million homes.

Arum said the fights looming in the future for Pacquiao are against Margarito whose comeback from a one year suspension on Sunday, Manila Time, will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over Studio 23.

Arum also indicated that if Miguel Cotto beats Yuri Foreman, Pacquiao may wish to move up in weight and face Cotto for an eighth world title.

Pacquiao hammered Cotto into submission in twelve rounds to win the WBO welterweight belt last November.
