Former WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito returns to the ring against a confident Roberto Garcia in Aguascalientes, Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time, in an exciting fight card to be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over Studio 23 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
There will also be a replay on the pre-eminent Channel 2 at 10:45 a.m. on May 16.
Margarito who served out a one year suspension by the California State Athletic Commission after his hand-wraps prior to the fight against Shane Mosley were found to contain a substance believed to be plaster-of-Paris which hardens when it gets wet, has continued to deny the allegations and said he is looking forward to his battle with Garcia.
Margarito who looms as a possible next opponent for pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao should a megabuck fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr fall through and Margarito wins over Garcia said ?It has been a long time since I fought and I am really looking forward to getting in the ring. I want to give the fans a great fight and walk away with a win.?
But it won?t be that easy according to Pacquiao?s conditioning expert Alex Ariza who told us that Margarito ?is in for a very big surprise? indicating that Garcia would beat him.
Garcia has refused to say anything about the so-called illegal hand-wraps and has described Margarito as a great fighter but promised to provide ?a big upset.?
Garcia said he ?feels ready for the Margarito challenge and I feel very confident that I will win this fight. He (Margarito) already had his time, now its my time to shine.?
The Top Rank card will also feature fighters who are familiar to Filipino fans with Jorge Solis making the first defense of his title against Mario Santiago who was beaten by featherweight Bernabe Concepcion at the Las Vegas Hilton last February 13 also on a card telecast by ABS-CBN.
In another eagerly anticipated bout Urbano Antillon takes on Rene Gonzalez who replaced an injured Brando Rios while the son of Mexican great Ricardo ?Finito? Lopez, Alonzo Lopez, will also showcase his talents in a six round bout.
