If plans do not miscarry, boxing hero Manny Pacquiao will soon be hosting a 90-minute boxing program on ABS CBN.

I brought up the idea of a Manny Pacquiao appearance in a boxing program to ABS CBN top honcho Gabby Lopez when we played golf together a month ago along with Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte.

Gabby, himself a sports buff, agreed that Pacquiao’s involvement will not only give the boxing program added luster but also bring in the needed commercials which would assure its survival.

“Manny Pacquiao Presents…” was my suggested title and Gabby liked the idea.

We had to wait until Manny came back from the US following his victory over Hector Velasquez to present to him the idea.

When we met at the lobby of the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City, Manny immediately expressed willingness, even excitement, at the idea of being able to help build up the career of budding boxers through the program.

“We should be able to develop boxers who will take my place when I retire,” said Manny to which I fully agree. History will tell us that the popularity of the sport depends on the heroes who rise from its ranks.

And so last Thursday, Manny, I and Rex Salud held preliminary talks with top ABS CBN officials handling sports and provincial operations – Peter Musngi and Ron Valdueza.

In my presentation, I proposed that the program also give focus on the human drama inside the ring instead of just showing two boxers trying to kill one another.

Behind every boxing match are human dramas. Why did these boxers join a sport which many consider bloody? What are their dreams? How do their loved ones react to the punishment or the victory inside the ring?

The affair which was supposed to be just a short lunch meeting that started at 12 noon stretched to about 1:30 p.m. following an animated conversation between Manny and the ABS CBN executives.

When we parted, we all agreed that the next step would be going to the details of the show.

What was made certain during the first meeting was the willingness of Manny Pacquiao to host the program with ABS CBN as the producer with a newly-formed group, MRM Sports as the co-producer.

In case you would like to know, MRM Sports, which will henceforth be involved in the promotion of boxing events is composed of three people with the following names – Manny, Rex, Manny.

I guess you know who they are.

So watch out for the biggest local boxing show ever on Philippine television – “Manny Pacquiao Presents.”
