Floyd Mayweather, Jr. kept his undefeated record (41-0, 25 KO) by beating Shane Mosley (46-6, 39KO) in their welterweight bout via a 12 round unanimous decision. This was made sweeter by the fact that he was almost knockdown by Mosley in the second round as he was at the receiving end of punching flurries that shook him and reverberated the arena with the near sold-out crowd off their feet, standing and chanting for Mosley to finish off Mayweather.
?I think after I caught him with that big right hand I opened up too much and played into his hands. I was too tight. When I hit him with the big right hand, I thought I was going to get the knockout. He started to avoid the punches. He did surprise me. Once I tried to get my timing back. I couldn?t adjust and he did. I am happy I took the fight. He is a true champion. Now you will see him and Manny, if Manny takes the blood test,? Mosley said after the fight.
?This is a contact sport and that comes with boxing. Sometime you get hit with some shots, you have to suck it up and be a warrior. He?s a future Hall of Famer. I am a future Hall of Famer,? Mayweather commented about the second round.
Mayweather showed that his chin and body were also as strong as his punching hands as he was able to withstand Mosley?s attack in the second round. The second round also proved to be Mosley?s last hurrah as Mayweather was able to carry and dominate the fight from thereon.
Judges Adalaide Byrd and Dave Moretti both scored 119-109 while judge Robert Hoyle scored it 118-110 giving Mosley the 1st and 2nd round.
Mayweather was able to recapiturate in the 3rd round and there were meaningful exchanges that the arena was filled with mixed chants from the crowd that were barely audible as ?Money? or ?Mosley.?
Mayweather who rose up to his reputation as the most dominating boxer the world has ever seen employed accurate punching ability and counter-punching with left jabs, straight right and right hook combination concentrating on Mosley?s head with lightning speed and crisp precision all throughout from 3rd round till the last round. On the other hand, Mosley was concentrating on his opponent?s body with jabs that barely hit their targets nor hurt Mayweather. His right punches to Mayweather?s head were most of the time air balls or hit Mayweather?s left shoulder as Mayweather was able to duck it low or was able to step back away from those punches.
There were no dancing. ?I wanted to give the fans what they wanted to see. They wanted a toe to toe battle and to see me coming forward more and that is what I wanted to give them,? Mayweather said as if to discredit his detractors. ?Going over the game plan with my father and my uncle at home because I don?t watch tapes, box early and start pressing the attack later in the fight.?
People expected Mosley to launch a last ditch to win in the last round but it was characterized by both fighters embracing each other most of the time with Mayweather protecting his lead and Mosley too tired to go for a knockout. There were few significant exchanges and no drama was unfolded in the last round.
?He is a hell of a fighter. He is a good fighter. I tried. It?s this close (gesturing with his right thumb and index finger with a small gap in between),? Mosley said in a almost hoarse voice.
?Who R U Picking?? is Manny Pacquiao?s dream fight. There is no more indecisiveness as to whether it?s Mayweather or Mosley that he will fight next. A lot of Filipinos were in attendance both in the weigh-in and in the actual fight and bought pay-per-views to see for themselves how their idol will fare well against the winner.
This mega fight , ?Who R U Picking?,? stimulates a drooling excitement for the boxing fans worldwide in great anticipation of much bigger fight between Floyd ?Money? Mayweather, Jr. and Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao that should happen for the good of boxing and to rest each other?s claim as to who is the best pound for pound boxer in the world.
?If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight, it is not hard to find me. (Issue of blood testing) We were going to make the fight a couple of months back but it didn?t happen. I take my hat off to Mosley. He had problems in the past but he?s a warrior. He took the blood and urine tests. I just want everyone to be on an even playing field. If every athlete is clean in the sport of boxing, take the test. I take the test. If Manny Pacquiao takes the blood and urine tests, we can fight. If he doesn?t, we won?t make the fight,? Mosley stated.
