Vinvin Rufino retained his Philippine featherweight title with a majority decision over Adonis Aguelo in the main event of a fight card which was part of the 10th Gabriel "Flash" Elorde Annual Awards at the Sofitel Harbour Tent Thursday night.

In a glittering awards night where pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao received the "Fighter of the Decade"award and was special guest and speaker, Rufino used his experience to advantage to out-point a game challenger in Aguelo.

Rufino was in command most of the twelve rounds, connecting with nifty combinations and often getting out of trouble with excellent footwork. Neither fighter was hurt and although the hard-hitting Aguelo connected on occasions with solid blows, Rufino never appeared to be troubled and came back immediately with a flurry of punches.

Two of the three judges had Rufino a comfortable winner by a lopsided 118-110 margin but the third judge Gil Co inexplicably scored the fight a draw turning in a seriously questionable 114-114 card.

With the win Rufino who lost a split decision to Japan?s Naoki Matsuda in an action-packed OPBF title fight in Tokyo last March 6 improved to 29-11-3 with 13 knockouts while Aguelo who won the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation title with a 1st round TKO over Jun Pader last February 28, dropped to 12-2-1 with 7 knockouts.

In the Women?s International Boxing Association minimum weight championship bout, the Philippines Gretchen Abaniel appeared to be a little rusty after failing to see action for one year but still proved far too good for Thailand?s Fahpratan Looksaikongdin who took a battering in the middle rounds although referee Virgilio Garcia allowed the fight to continue.

Abaniel, as expected, scored a shutout 100-90 victory on the scorecards of all three judges. She improved her record to9-1 with 2 knockouts while the Thai challenger fell to 7-2 with no knockouts.

The grandsons of the late "Flash" Elorde who reigned as world junior lightweight champion for almost seven-and-a-half years both won by knockouts in obvious mismatches.
Super bantamweight Juan Miguel Elorde scored a knockout at 2:12 of the first round with some crippling body shots against Anthony Balubar who dropped to 2-4-1 with 1 knockout while "Mig" Elorde improved to 7-0 with 2 knockouts.

The elder brother, lightweight Juan Martin Elorde took just 42 seconds of the second round to batter Thailand?s Kan Hamonkol who according to boxrec.com was making his pro debut but according to a document submitted by the Thai Boxing Commission had a fight record of 2 wins and 2 defeats.

In a Luzon Professional Boxing Association super featherweight championship, promising Erickson Origenes was held to a draw by Joan De Guia with all three judges turning in identical 95-95 scorecards.

The 24 year old Origenes? record now stands at 10-2-2 with 8 knockouts while De Guia?s recprd is 10-10-4 with 2 knockouts.
