BATAWANG VS SOLIS HAS NEW VENUE

There is a new venue for this Sunday's showdown between Filipino Bert Batawang and Mexican Ulises Solis. The fight has been transferred to Ciudad Obregon from its original venue in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico.

The duo will duke it out in a 12-round eliminator with the winner automatically advancing to challenge champion Carlos Tamara, who defeated Brian Viloria recently in Manila.

Former world champion Solis (29-2-2, 20KOs) of Mexico has vowed to defeat once again the Cebu-based Batawang (45-14, 37KOs) in their rematch set this Sunday.

Solis, then the IBF junior flyweight champion, stopped Batawang in the ninth round during their first encounter in 2007.

"My training has been good and I am ready. I will beat Batawang again," Solis was quoted as saying.

Batawang is currently in Los Angeles with his manager Sammy Gello-ani en route to Mexico.

A few days back, the Filipino fighter underwent a timely root canal therapy at the dental clinic of renowned orthodontist Ed De la Vega in California.

"Routine dental checkup revealed that Batawang had an abscess on one of his bicuspids," indicated De la Vega in his Philboxing.com report.

"An extraction is out of the question because he will not have enough time to heal. Besides, that was not the proper way to handle the problem. Thus, we did the next best thing. We performed an emergency root canal therapy. Luckily the procedure turned out okay and the prognosis for the tooth, if properly restored later with a “crown”, is good," said De la Vega, who also does dental work on superstar Manny Pacquiao, Gerry Penalosa, as well as the other top Filipino fighters.
