Fil-Australian Heath “The Heat” Ellis will defend his WBC Asian Boxing Council and IBF Pan Pacific welterweight titles against hard-hitting Steve “Super” Maxwell at the Malvern Town Hall in Melbourne on April 9.

Ellis whose mother is from the Philippines is the nephew of former IBF world champion Lester Ellis who was in Manila recently with top promoter Peter Maniatis to watch the WBC light flyweight title fight which Filipino Brian Viloria lost in a heartbreaking twelfth round TKO to Carlos Tamara of Colombia.

Maniatis told insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that should Ellis win he is certain to be ranked in the top 20 by the World Boxing Council.

Maniatis who was again voted Victoria’s “Promoter of the Year” for 2009 making it is fourth such award having been named in 2005, 2006 and 2008 initiated talks with Solar Sports which promoted the Viloria-Tamara title fight to feature Ellis in a fight card in the Philippine s should be beat Maxwell.

The 21 year old Ellis is promoted by Maniatis. He has a record of 12-1-1 with 6 knockouts and is coming off a unanimous six round decision over tough Aswin Cabuy last December 20.

The talented youngster won the WBC Asian Boxing Council interim title with an impressive twelve round decision over Thailand’s Jakkirt Suwummalirt on November 20, 2009 after dropping the tough Thai opponent in the third round.

Ellis won the IBF Pan Pacific title in September 2008 with a unanimous twelve round decision over another Thai, veteran Kongthawat Sorkitti who had a record of 45-32-1 for a total of 78 fights.

Ellis’s only setback was a majority decision loss to Filipino Junmar Dulog on December 7, 2007 while his only draw was against another Filipino, rugged Jun Paderna. Their showdown ended in a majority draw on March 28, 2008.

Maxwell is a 27 year old Tasmanian who packs power and is coming off a first round knockout win fashioned in the very first minute over Wayne Martin last March 6. However, his biggest win was a stunning 2nd round TKO victory over IBO Asia Pacific welterweight champion Matthew Paulley on December 11, 2009 when he had Paulley down in the very first round before the referee John Cauchi stepped in and called a halt at :31 seconds of the second round.

Maniatis informed us that Maxwell has won his last four fights by knockout so he can fight and Ellis faces a good test.
